Czech low recoil ammo ???'s

Post by Sgt. Rob »

Tell me about the Czech low recoil 7.62x54R ammo. Anybody used it and how low was recoil? I added 108rds to an ammo order yesterday hoping that this might let Wyatt shoot his Mosin.

Gallery loads, they are intended for 25 yards or less, I have a lot of this sort for the Swedish Mauser.

Jim, was recoil low enough you think to train a youngster on a large rifle while sitting at the bench?

Czech Hollow Core Short Range Ammo.
48 grain bullet.
Very accurate out to 100 yards.
Feels like shooting a 22 rifle.
Has full powder charge,so still has muzzle flash from those short Mosins, but hardly any recoil.
3700 fps!

I don't remember Rob, I only had twenty rounds of the stuff five years ago. It was comparable to the Swedish stuff I have in that you can hardly feel it fire, but the Swedish stuff was useless at 100 yards. Put an egg between your shoulder and the rifles buttplate, rest it on sandbags on the bench, fire it. If the egg is unbroken so should be the child's skin :) I heard an old fart telling a young father that when the man asked if his five year old could handle the recoil from a .22 rifle. I asked how the egg would stay in place, he told me, and this is a direct quote, " you hold it in place with one hand, fire the rifle with the other ya dunderhead" Teach me to open my mouth! :) I never tried the egg thing myself, so prepare for a possible mess.

If that is low recoil ammo, combine it with a slip on LimbSaver recoil pad, and you are good to go.

Thanks Gents! Fred, I think the limbsaver would add to the length of pull to a stock that is already a bit long for him. My main concern is should I buy more than the 108rds I already have coming, because if it works good and he likes it, I'd like to stockpile alot more. And whenever I get into a good thing and wait, it seems the supply disappears. So, if others reccomend it for a 6yo to shoot a 91/30, I trust ya'lls opinion on this forum. Wyatt already shoots my .22 good. But now that he has his own Mosin I'd love for him to get some range time with it. And shots at this time will probably not be over 25yds.

Well, 15 to 20 rounds of milsurp ammo has me hurting. Others can shoot the Mosin's all day long. But, with the LimbSaver, I can shoot the gun all day long. Crank out rounds until the cosmoline is oozing out of the stock... Same with the 8mm Mauser. Yes, it adds an inch, but I don't want to shoot one without it.

All I read in this is "I am one very proud Dad and I can't wait until I can go shooting military surplus rifles with my Son!" :)

Rob, the way you are introducing Wyatt to these rifles is admirable. You will always have my respect.

Personally, the way I seat a stock against my shoulder, I'd likely crack an egg before I ever pulled the trigger! I don't really notice the recoil...its more like a sharp shove than a "punch". I know you have access to a bench rest, but can Wyatt hold and shoulder the 91/30? Maybe you could pick him up an inexpensive single shot .410 or 20 ga. so he can work his way up the line. I didn't shoot center-fire rifles until I was out of high school, but my Dad got me a 20 ga. pump when I was 8 and I shot it hundreds of times with no problem. I am pretty sure he could handle my AR...maybe look into a similar caliber?

The Mosin would likely "rock his world" even if he kept it tight against his shoulder. If he let it slip even once, well, I'd hate to think of what may happen.

You know what you're doing, so I won't get concerned :)

Thanks Cliff, My thoughts are he could shoot his Mosin from the bench and at least get to actually use it occasionally. Sort of a thrill factor for him. (yeah and me too,). Its gonna be a few years before he can actually shoulder it and fire from positions with it. I just don't want to start any bad habits firing regular ammo from the bench. Cause it would possibly startle him at the minimum, and being much smaller than me I am sure he would feel recoil. Myself, I can shoot surplus 7.62x54R all day and not ever notice it. But I am 6ft. and 210lbs. If the training ammo recoils like a .22magnum, he'll be capable of popping a few rounds from the bench, without me worrying about developing any fear of the rifle or flinching habits. Like I mentioned he likes shooting .22's and BB guns. And he does well, although I am right there the whole time. It would be nice if he could try out his Mosin.

I have access to M4's but they belong to the tax payers in the county and I really can't use one for my own family recreational shooting. So maybe will have to think about my own. I just hate to spend the money. I am a wood and steel guy and see my duty weapons (or any black plastic firearm) as tools (insert a yawning smilie here).

How about an M1 carbine Rob? If you didn't want to go the expense of an original I see some of the reproductions pop up on GB from time to time. Anybody can shoot a M1 Carbine, it's the rifle I use when my pistol shooter friends want to try a real weapon for the first time, then graduate them to the 91/59. They love the 91/59.

The M1 carbine is great, and the older two boys used one extensively while learning. I am hesitant however to go back into USGI given whats happened to me now twice. And given the ammo cost currently, I can not see buying a repo carbine, if I end up making the plunge again, I have to think about total investment. I like the Mosins more these days, as I can afford them fairly easily, and its an area of milsurps with no unpleasent memories attached. Its hard to sell off a collection, even when you know it is the right thing to do. I have honestly become quite enamored of the 91/30 and its collectability and shootability. I really under rated and undervalued these for years, and am grateful the opportunity to collect them and shoot them is still available to me. What I need to keep an eye out for is a nice M38 / M44 / or M91-59 for use with the low recoil ammo. Wyatt may or may not be able to shoot the low recoil ammo at this time, I'll need to test it first, but he will definately move into it sooner then standard milsurp. So I think I am going to order more.

I'd be happy to send my M38 out to you for awhile, but I am afraid it would have even more recoil.

Damn, where's an inexpensive .22 caliber training rifle when you need one?

Cliff, .22's I got covered. And I appreciate the offer on the M38, but I think something will eventually pop up. Remember I am wondering about the recoil on the reduced loads. They are supposed to be light, just waiting on my SGAmmo shipment now to find out.

OT, but did you have to send a copy of your DL to order from them?

I wouldn't say this is inexpensive but it fits the bill. http://gun-deals.com/displaydeal.php?dealid=7889

Sam swears by these rounds and says they have little to no recoil. I believe his wife Lala shoots them and she's a small lady. He should be fine with then Rob.

I've been fighting the rifle buying gods since Bryan put all those Mosins up last night and lost. I bought 4 more of them a few hours ago. I'm in the process of buying 2 Mausers and another SKS now. Got calls to make tomorrow. I decided to go with the 24/47 and M48 that Widener's has as well as the M59/66 Yugo they have. CL upped the price of his 24/47s to $225 and with no cleaning rod or anything else it made Widener's look that much better. Widener's comes with Bayonet, scabbard, frog, cleaning kit, ammo pouch, sling, cleaning rod and oil can for $269 and the M48 is the same price but only has the cleaning rod but I have an extra Bayonet that will fit it if need be. I like the bent bolt on it. The SKS, well I just wanted it. ;)

Next time I come over, we will have to build gun racks instead of shoot. :D
