91/30 prices are creeping up
Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
Got back from a gun show today, I saw a:
Plain Jane 90/31 Izhevsk '43 for $225
Fin that I didn't even get close to as I saw the price was $425
A Polish M44 for $350
A beat to hell M38 w/ M44 stock Izhevsk '43 for $180 (and I'm sure I'll regret not buying it)
I have never seen a Tula in the wild, only through order.

Those prices are nuts. I'm cooling my heels right now on the Mosins & am not actively on the hunt. But I will buy if the price is right & there are still deals from time to time.

I'm thinking maybe another wave of them are coming soon.

The sad part is all these rifles I saw at pawn shops over the last few months actually are now compatible with current market prices.

I don't have a FFL or Curio & Relic, so I have to go through my dealer to buy weapons. I paid 139 out the door for a 1932 Tula Hex M91/30 over the weekend and I thought that was high. I hope prices aren't going the way of the gun show you mentioned, or my collection may come to a screeching halt.

Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
Couple of comments;
Remember what happened to .380's. They dissapeared. Now they are back. Everyone was buying a little pocket pistol to prepare for the coming Zombie apocalypse and the starving hordes created by the recession.
.45ACP were outrageous for a while. Even 30.06 were sparse at Academy.
Now Academy carries 7.62 x 54r!
Shows the power of the Mosin.
There will be some pushing of prices for the next election. We will be told that the gummint wants our weapons. (Which some of them actually do).
The NRA and the gun community have politicians scared. They wont pass a law if there isn't something in it for them.
What is the upside of banning certain guns? There is just not much public support for gun control, as long as we stay vigilant. There is less trust in government and more trust in an 18.5 inch Mosberg 500.
And to close the circle, introduce someone to the joys of the Mosin. They will become a gun owner and enthusiast, thus helping to protect our right to bear arms.

91/30 prices are creeping up
I just got mine a couple weeks ago. Took 4 weeks exactly from the day I sent the application off.My C&R still has not arrived yet. Been over two months. I called their office and they said takes at least 60 to 90 days now because of increased demand. I hope prices don,t go up to soon.I've been itching to get some more.JGC

Six months here in NY, and a visit from a BATFE agent to explain the rules.

If anyone is looking, Copes has a selection of 90/31's in right now. $89.99 plus actual shipping for a round receiver. Call and ask to speak to Misty, for the $10 hand select fee, it sounds like it will guarantee a Tula.

$125 for M91/30's both round and hex for the time being at the local gun shop in Falls Church, VA. It's actually more because (after tax) the guy is trying to charge a $30 "transfer fee" on all of his in-store, retail transactions!! This is whether you buy one, two, or three rifles...it doesn't matter.
A lot of unsuspecting people that just don't know better are getting swindled left and right. I'll be taking my business elsewhere thank you very much.
$100 for round; $120 for hex at gun shows in northern Virginia.

Sounds to me like he is trying to get a double on unsuspecting people. This amounts to fraud and stealing if you ask me. I would be very careful of any dealings with this place.

You know I was thinking the same thing. I'm not sure what the requirements are to sell firearms in a retail setting. Some things vary from state to state such as waiting periods as apposed to background checks but he's not transfering the firearms he's selling in a retail setting. I don't begrudge a guy making money but at a minimum this is bad business and what it sounds like is instead of simply selling the rifles at a higher price he's scamming people while pawning off blame to the government for the extra fee. At a maximum he's commiting fraud but then I don't know. Either way I've never been charged a transfer fee ever while purchasing a firearm from the seller, which is what he is, not the receiver.
Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
I've heard that some dealers around here charge $5 if they have to call in a background check, but I've personally never seen it happen. If I ever did run across a situation like this, it would become part of the bargaining process. "Out the door" includes taxes and any other fees in my mind.

Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
I don't know if my dealer is feeding me BS, but he seems like a honest guy. First of all, he admits he is making some profit on the MNs, but he says it is only about 15% above cost, but he does add a few bucks for shipping. He says the shipping costs are higher than ever, and he can't buy the guns in bulk because not that many people are interested in buying them in this small town where collectors like myself are few and far between. He only orders about six at a time and he says the shipping costs are an average of about 10 bucks a gun. His latest batch was a group of hex receiver M91/30s that he got from ATI and he is charging 129.95 plus tax. So if he is buying these guns for around 100 bucks and marking them up 15%, the cost breakdown might be like this:
Dealer cost per rifle: 100
15% markup 15
Shipping 10
Total 125
Tax (State 7%) 8.75
Grand Total 133.75
Since I have bought two in the past three weeks, he gave me a "discount" on the last one and I got it for 125 out the door. Does this sound similar to what other retailers are out there charging? If you guys out there have FFLs or Curio and Relic license, what is the going rate for a similar gun? Are your shipping costs on average 10 bucks a gun?
EDIT: I'm assuming his costs are around 100 bucks per gun; this is based on prices I have seen on the net; various surplus dealers. By the way, these guns are going at gun shows around here for about the same price; 130 plus tax.

Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
I do some work for a local gun shop and there is no charge for a NICS check from the BATFE, they even have an 800 number to call them. If anybody was to try and charge me that fee on top of price and taxes they would see the back of me quick while I mumbled something you wouldn't say around the kids.

Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
Cabela's is the only dealer around here that has them "new" on the shelf. They are bringing them in to the stores on the normal truck deliveries of course. Typical list price is $149.99, but they are on sale often at $99.99. Tax is extra obviously.
When Pac sent me the hex, it was $24 I believe from Pa. to Ne.
It sounds to me like your Dealer is being very fair. I want them to make money of course, but make it honestly. It sounds like your Dealer is doing just that.

Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
If he wants to be fair about it then raise the price and then don't charge the transfer fee. This just sounds like double dealing to me. I have done business with a few stores and i agree with LC, They would see no more of my business.
