MAS 36?

Post by target »

So here pretty soon the BBT is gonna drop off one of these at the Local dealer. I know a little bit about them but what can you guys who own them tell me. Any quirks besides the lack of a safety and odd bolt handle angle that I need to keep an eye out for? 1946 build, bright clean bore, factory Refurb so its got a mix of numbers on it, but that doesn't bug me one bit since it looks brand new. What kind of accuracy can I expect from one? I don't need a tack driver but I'd like to be able to hit what I'm shootin for.

Pics in the next week or 2 when it gets here!

Did you get a 7.5 or one of the .308 conversions? I've heard the .308s can have issues...

7.5 French, I wouldn't go for one of the conversions.

The French make good rifles, they don't always cover themselves with glory using them, but the rifles are fine. Mine is refurbished, most of them seem to be that I have seen, I have not shot it since the 90's so I don't remember how it shot, probably well or I would remember. 7.5 French is on the reload list for one of these days.

They shoot good and look good on the wall, nothing compared to a K98 or a 91/30 as far as the shooting aspect. I mentioned on a thread in a different time, 1936 saw the introduction of the Garand by the U.S. a mostly isolationist nation while the French with an empire to defend adopted the MAS 36

The Mas36 may be a little utilitarian looking but it is a very well built rifle. Mine is an excellent shooter and was impressive enough to cause my shooting partner to go out and buy one himself. So buy it and if you don't reload then start as this is one of the more expensive rounds to buy.

It just got here today and I'm very impressed with the condition, when the french refurb a gun... they dont mess around. Mirror bore, with a 1/3 of an inch counter bore. one noticeable blemish on the stock and its tiny. The bolt matches the receiver so I'm pretty happy. Says 1945 under the barrel so Im gonna assume thats the production date. Did the French ever bed stocks? If not then someone else did but its not permanent so that doesnt bug me. Pictures tomorrow!

The MAS 36 is in awesome shape, compliments the Enfield hanging above it nicely.

Thanks, I think im gonna order a sling and a few hundred rounds of ammo for it tomorrow. Looks like the previous owner might of used it for some pretty serious shooting. The front sight is slightly filed to a fine point, and the follower was ground down slightly so it wouldnt stop the bolt. Also like I posted earlier, someone bedded the stock and did a darn good job of it, thankfully thats not permanent so I'm gonna shoot it first before I decide to leave it or remove it. If it shoots straight... why fix whats not broke?

There is is, talk about small! I was not expecting such a small lightweight gun. There is only one thing wrong with the gun... I forgot to get a picture of it, the bayonet tube has a small crack in it, but it doesnt look like its a problem or anything. Can't wait to get it out to the range, should be a lot of fun!

Thanks. I hate the screws on the barrel bands, I don't know what they are called but they have notches in the side instead of being flat head or philips. I need to buy a couple screwdrivers and modify them accordingly.

I can't believe i didnt post where i got this. Liberty Tree Collectors, they seemed like a good group so that's who I went with. Good descriptions and pretty fast shipping. Had I used a card that rifle would of been here in less than a week. Can't wait to get some ammo for it and see what it can do. If it shoots where I point it, I think I might use it for deer hunting.

The screws are to stop the soldier from taking down the rifle past what regulations call for, they have been in use since the Berthier rifles.
