Buying my first Mosin

Post by Derekrm10 »

I saw a mosin at a gun show in town a few weeks ago and fell in love with it and then even more so after I spent the last week buried in the history of it. More to the point, I'm looking to buy a mosin, but I'm not sure which markings or armories I should look for. I don't want it to be too expensive, but I want as good of quality as possible and Russian. Thank you

Hey, welcome to the forum! And congrats on your first step into the Mosin world :)

To bring you up to speed, it would take a week of typing. And that would just be a good start. I suggest you go to your local Cabela's, Big 5, etc. and pick up a nice 91/30 for $100. That will put one in your hands and get you involved in the community. Participating, reading and asking question here on the forum will help you as you expand your collection. Trust me, you will expand :)

Mostly, welcome! I look forward to finding out what you get :)

Welcome to the forum. At this point don't worry about which or what one you buy. If you can physically handle them just buy the one that you feel wants to go home with you. If you are buying over the net any one under 100 bucks and is red is a good start.

Once you get one you can start using it as a guide to identify different features and marking. You will look up a mark for yours and that will lead you to another mark and another model. It's part of the fun of owning these old battle rifles.

Welcome to the forum, any of the Soviet M91/30 refurbished rifles will get you off and running, they are also the most commonly available Mosin right now.

Run away, don't walk. The path before you is filled with more guns...

As stated, get a 91/30 that speaks to you, then start looking at gun safes. Welcome to the addiction, I mean the forums. :D

At 19 you should be legal to buy it yourself, but if you still live under Dads roof then I can see why you need him on board. Talk him into getting one also so you both can go shooting .

Or find one of those good Finnish war movies on you tube. Lots of Mosins in them.

 How fortunate you are! Wished I had found Mosin Nagants at 19. Its never too late for mosinitis and its history to take hold. Hope my daughter can handle the recoil of it all! :D

Hi Derek, as a father of a good kid almost your age I can tell you that having your dad involved could work to your advantage. Then he could be buying you both a rifle! :P I recommend just finding a nice clean unmolested rifle that fits your budget and posting it here on the forum. You are gonna have a huge support group. Remember to learn the best way to clean your rifle is by removing the bolt and cleaning from the chamber end, so you need a good cleaning rod that is long enough to work well. That will prevent you from doing any harm to the muzzle, a delicate area of the barrel that can affect accuracy. All ammo that you shoot is likely to be corrosive, and there are so few that are not that it is best to assume that all ammo is. You are goingto have a million questions, and here you can find friends and answers. Good luck at the gun show, and welcome to the forum.
