1943 Mosin sniper rifle with some concerns.

Post by sunray »

Hi .
First post as I am dipping a toe into owning a Mosin Nagant.
I have searched the internet and You Tube .
I have some photos and will get more with a better camera.

Positives
-Correct front sight , not offset , with tall post.
- Receiver , bolt and buttplate match numbers
- bolt handle seems correct

Concerns
- Scope number does not match rifle Scope No5-48206 , Hammer and sickle, 91/30 no year.
Sight picture good, correct “T”. Appears to have Aluminium front tube part
- Year on barrel “43 г’ , two digits only, Serial no. 4335902 other markings to follow .
- serial numbers a bit rough and uneven.
- Faint markings on sight base - no serial, no electro pencil.
-Cut out for scope base a little rough.
- Lands in barrel bright , but grooves a bit frosty. Is this acceptable in an 80 year old rifle firing corrosive ammo ?

I’ll have to resize my photos as they are too big for forum limit.

Sorry about the list of questions - I just don’t want to pay sniper prices for a repro ,faked or dressed up standard M/N

I hope the forum can help.

Kind regards

Steve

Post up pics and we can help.

And the front sight stuff, pure internet nonsense, the front sight on a PU was the same as on a 91/30 and any drifting of the sight or the height of the post was simply a result of the rifle being zeroed at the arsenal.

Well Mike, the guy is on the internet, and he is wearing a white smock, so he must be an expert...

In my profession, an "expert" is defined as "An asshole from out of town." I think that may fit the video presenter. I will let others comment on the OP's rifle.

True, that's why he came here to get some straight answers, from people who know a thing or two.

Don't forget we were are Mosin Nagant newbies, hell milsurp newbies in general. How much information has been debunked since we started collecting?

PM was taught to be something special, turns out it's just a refurb mark, etc.

Not alot to go on but what I see looks ok so far, and it might be a Polish or Yugoslavian refurb as the rear sight is in the white.

Posted for Stephen....

Hi Mike .

Can you post this for me so that respondents don’t think me rude or ignorant. Still dumped back to the log on page 😕

“Thank you all for responding. I’m truly grateful for all opinions and replies but my access to this thread seems choked and I have difficulty replying with me being constantly bounced back to the Log On page. it is only thanks to Mike that I can post anything at all.

I hope the situation improves
Kind regards to all.
Steve”

Hi All.
Apologies for the delay in responding.
I am having problems with the seller.

I’m trying to gain access to take more photos but he is proving hard to.contact .
He may be holding out for more money (he wanted £1300 ! ).
As soon as I get access I’ll post again.

Buying firearms in the U.K. is severely restricted with licences and stroppy police deciding what you can have.
Each calibre has to be requested individually.
Don’t EVER give up your 2A or you will end up like the U.K.-

An amazing journey so far with special marks, Arsenal stamps , matching numbers, refurbishment marks and replacement parts.
It makes me want a Mosin Nagant Sniper rifle even more !
I’ll be back with more photos.
Many thanks

Steve
