Air conditioning failure

Post by awalker1829 »

AC unit at the townhouse failed Monday night. Repair technician came out Tuesday and reported that the coolant had all leaked out of the system and that the pressure valves that were supposed to shut off in the event of a coolant leak had both failed. I moved myself and the dog to my parents guest house and am still here. We got estimates for repair and replacement. Repair would be about $8k and replacement about $16k. The current system is 16 years old, so we’re going to replace it.

Techs will be by in the morning to set up a portable ac unit and I’ll be able to move back in. Replacement unit should be installed no later than July 1.

Fuck.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

The ac failed in my friends van on the way home from a small estate sale yesterday and I near died in the mid 90's heat and high humidity we had yesterday. Not fun.

I replace my three ton system two years ago after the previous unit had a 25 year run. It did not cost anything like that amount of money.

Portable unit has been installed to cool the bedroom. AC is essential here in the desert, so naturally prices are a bit higher here than in some other places-supply and demand at work. Discounts knocked about $1k off the final price. Fortunately the trust is paying for the unit, so I'm not out of pocket any money.

I get that. My daughter lives in Alaska and almost everything and every service is about twice what it is down here.

Granted it was in Jan/Feb 2019, but a complete HVAC replacement ran us under $6,000.00 and this was for a 3 ton unit.

Our roof which was done at the same time, with a partial rebuild in areas ran us $17,000.00. Which is about what they want to charge you for the HVAC replacement.

The unit we’re installing is a heat pump, which probably factors into the price. That said, it should probably be more efficient than a regular AC unit and save some money on the operating side.

The HVAC company delivered and set up a portable unit this morning. It blew cold air but failed to bring the temperature in the bedroom. They will be sending out a different tech with another unit tomorrow. The guy that came out today was less than thorough in attaching the exhaust hose to the unit and sealing the gaps between the exhaust vent and the window frame. Anyways, the dog and I are back at the guest house tonight.

Spent yesterday dealing with HVAC. Consultant came out on his off day to try to rectify the portable air conditioner issue. He came back today with a second unit and set it up. Now the room is cooling like it’s supposed to.

Gotta give John credit-he answered every one of my calls even on his day off and kept working on the problem until it got resolved.

That's rough man. After living in Arizona for several years myself, AC is vital. That's not something you can go long without especially in summer. Hope they are able to get that fixed for you ASAP.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

I guess I'll quit whining about the $700 "defrost control board" replacement my heat pump system just got.

That sucks. We put in two new systems last year. One upstairs and one downstairs. $20,500 😳

Air conditioner was installed yesterday. Techs arrived around 7:40 and it took about six hours to remove the old unit and get the new one set up. Replacement was complicated by the fact that the unit is on the roof of the second story of the house. New thermostat makes it easier to program the unit.

Gone are the days of the old mercury bulb thermostats. Mine does everthing but the dishes.
