Warning if yall have electronics plugged into surge suppressors, check the status of the surge suppressors out. Ours has two lights on it Grounded and Protecting well a few months ago when I plugged our modem into it all the lights were working. We took a strike not long afterwards and I should have looked, but everything was working and I didn't think of it. Well when I looked yesterday only the Grounded light was working/on, so our surge suppressor became just a power strip. Don't know if it happened during the 1st strike or 2nd strike.
Last week we took another hit somewhere during the thunderstorms and we lost our security cameras. Once I looked at everything the 3 month old monitor was fried, and something in the DVR fried. Thought it was the HDD again, so I replaced it and no joy, so something on the motherboard fried. So we replaced the monitor, and are now going to pick up a whole new CCTV system. I'll just have 2 spare HDD drives for it.
Now imagine if it had been one of the 3 65 inch or bigger TVs! Then we would be talking serious money getting fried.
We have decided to replace all the surge suppressors, AND check into having a suppressor put in line with the main power box. Plus we are checking around with electricians to see if they can come out and figure out why after all these years we suddenly take 2 strikes with a few months of one another.
So do yourself a favor and check out your surge suppressors, replacing them with new ones is a lot cheaper then replacing all your electronics. Granted we just lost a CCTV DVR and monitor this time, but it could have been worse.

Re: Lighting Strike.....
I have these protectors, and battery backups, but unplug anything sensitive when I am not using it because surge protectors are not 100% guarantee against lightening damage or other surges. Also there is EMP to worry about, both natural and manmade. One school of thought has it that even without a faraday cage electronics could survive if not connected to the grid. Probably not, and my backups are all caged, but you never know.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: Lighting Strike.....
Funny you should ask Steve, when I had my heart attack and flat lined 7 times, my co-workers asked if I saw a light when I was dead. Told them no, but I woke up with burns, the whites of my eyes were completely red, and I couldn't speak as my tongue was so swollen from me biting it (All this from being shocked repeatedly), and I swear I had a burnt/singe smell trapped in my nose. One of them goes, well we know where Mikey was and wasn't........Just putting that out there!
