Scope covers looped through mount

Post by James84 »

Hi all, after a few posts on here and asking for help identifying real or fake PU rifles, I settled on one that I am fairly certain is genuine. The only thing that is bugging me is the scope cover being threaded through the mount... I've read a few places that sometimes this was done on a genuine rifle but that it is very rare. I saw on a forum someone saying they had an unquestionably genuine rifle that they bought with it looped through and they found they could just squeeze it back through to remove it from the mount, so perhaps someone just added it at a later date.

Edit: Does anyone here know if this was ever done for definite? I've deleted the pictures as I'm not looking for feedback on the rifle itself (I know it is an arsenal refurb) but rather the situation regarding the scope covers and whether it is a definite no-no to have them through the mount?

I'm not a sniper expert like some on here, but I would not judge a rifle on how the removable scope cover was attached. That one also looks refinished. That would worry me a lot more.

OK understood - so scope covers sewn through the scope mounts are not of concern? That puts my mind at ease. Thanks both.

On the used market it would not concern me. As you pointed out it is not hard to put the cover through there like that. I would do it myself if I had one, just so I wouldn't lose the cover.
Also by refinish I don't mean a refurb from the arsenal. That shiny smooth butt stock looks a lot like a sand and tru-oil job to me. It is hard/impossible to actually tell from pictures, but I have been collecting mosins since 2008, and have been an Admin here since 2011, so I have seen many in person and thousands of pictures posted here. That stock would concern me if I were looking to purchase the rifle.

Things that are "added on" like scope cover, scope end covers, ammo pouches, cleaning kits and on and on, are items you can get all over the place. They mean nothing because they are usually original pieces and not reproductions anyway (except for some items and those are easy to tell) so, they are real. Are they usually on a sniper rifle? Well, I noticed they were on the older snipers first sold like the RGUNS imports, but not on the later models. But, it means nothing. If you want them, buy a set and put them on.

Without them means nothing. It's the rifle that counts.

ah thank you for the clarification. Yes I think you're right with the stock. I have paid a very good price for it with that in mind, along with the rust on the metalwork taken into account. I will be putting some garnet shellac over the finish to make it as correct as I can, otherwise leaving it alone. The bore is pretty good so this is now my 'shooter' and I am hunting for a more correct rifle to keep as a collectable.
