Ultimate secret to successful collecting revealed

Post by SA1911a1 »

Collect something that no one else wants. I buy these darlings after they have been abused and allowed to rust in a tackle box for a few decades. I pay less than ten dollars for them, put perhaps a hundred dollars labor in them and then they are worth maybe eight dollars. But I enjoy it.

These range from the 1930s through the 80s, all are American made using good 1095 steel and when I am through with them you could do surgery with the blades. (formally or informally) The same general pattern has a multitude of variations to keep an old guy busy. There are at least six or seven makers in the photo, and each maker varied the construction over the years.

The US Military bought some these knives for issuance to the troops during WWII, referring to them as "engineer's knife." https://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums ... es/page/2/

They made the one with the glass cutter for B&E guys, and the Pharmacy knife for another brand of thief. ;)

If you have ever thought that Gun collectors can get cranky on forums, don't ever post to the major knife forums. The folks on those forums are obsessed.... I may have set a record getting banned on two of them in a single month!

That is a nice collection Steve, building a shadowbox for them?
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

When I was a kid I always had a pocket knife in the pocket of my jeans.

Very cool collection you have there.

The way I see it, the only thing worth collecting is that which is interesting to you, the collector.

Very nice collection by the way.

Guess you just weren't cut out for the other forums/sites. You just didn't cut it. Your sense of humor cut them to the quick.

Okay, okay I'll stop with the puns......Nice collection and if you enjoy them that's all that matters.

when I started carrying a knife, I would tote the same one until it wore a hole in my jeans-----
then I would put it away, grab a little bit bigger knife and tote it until I had another hole issue, somewhat bigger than the first...could go through 3-4 knife sizes before buying new jeans.....

I started carrying a pocket knife as a kid too. We even carried them to school, although the official policy was that we shouldn't. When a teacher would need to cut something she was ask for a knife and damn near every boy would pull his out. I do not remember any vandalism of school property with knives either, we knew better and the punishment would have been swift and meaningful. I never knew anyone who was cut with a knife in a fight either. (until I was an adult) Today I never put my pants on without a knife in my pocket and it is a rare day that it does not get used.
