Ok, So first post.
Just recently purchased an M44, and I was pretty pleased to find it. I traded in a sportster for it. Even the wife said... "Get it if you want it." I was like huh??? So, I got it. I proceeded to take it apart (so simple it was disturbing), and found it caked with cosmoline. Even the barrel was full of it. So I think I made a good purchase. I'm still cleaning this baby. Can't wait to take it out to the range and give it a workout. I know my shoulder is gonna pay dearly but oh well.
After building ARs for a couple of years, assembly and disassembly of my Mosin is mind bending. So much so, I took it apart and put it together about 5 times just to get familiar with it.

Most infantry rifles of that era are simple, they were designed to be used by troops who had near zero experience with mechanical devices. Boys fresh off the farms that still farmed like it was 1792 instead of 1892 when some mechanization was arriving on American farms. The repeating, cartridge firing rifle was a new experience for almost all of them no matter what country it was. Even Alvin York, WW1 Medal of Honor recipient, had only prior experience with single shot muzzleloaders before entering the army.

After the first few thousand rounds your shoulder will limber up.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Greetings, new friends,
I do not own a MN rifle (yet), nor a Nagant revolver (also, yet), but the day isn't over yet. I found this forum during a search for info on reloading the 7.62x38r, and decided it was interesting enough in other respects to merit joining it.
I DO own and shoot an SKS and a Cz-52 pistol. I am also fairly experienced with the AK47/AKM platforms, so I am not totally unacquainted with weapons from the Warsaw Pact. They'll never replace my M1A & 1911A1, nor my StG58 & P-35, but I still have fun with them!
I look forward to making new friends, learning about MNs and other eastern-bloc firearms, and finding constructive (if unavoidably expensive) ways to treat my latent "Mosinitis".

New here, but have been collecting Mosin-Nagants for years now. Have a few rifles with interesting and not-so-obvious histories that I'll be posting here, to see what you all think. Starting with the one I transferred through my FFL yesterday.

A teaser, until I get better pictures.

Image

1936, non-refurb. Non-matching numbers. Has seen obvious use and probably a lot of it. No obvious Finn features and no obvious Spanish features. No MP8 "bomb" stamp. No sanded stock or crude replacement handguard. No import mark. I think it almost HAS to be a SCW rifle, but there isn't a single obvious SCW feature on the rifle.

The kicker is I have it's 1937 cousin from years back, which tells similar story.

Howdy,
I'm a military historian (I actually have degrees to prove it  ) that has been a weapons collector for45+ years. I had to sell a bunch due to a divorce and later because I moved on to a sailboat. I worked at the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins, Georgia after I got out of the Army. Later, after my divorce, I was an editor for both World War Two and Vietnam magazines.

I was recently gifted a 1943 Finnish M-91. My knowledge base on the Finnish versions is weak and I look forward to absorbing as much information as I can and sharing anything I can on the this board.

Hello Forum,

My name is Kyle and I recently came across what I believe to a mosin from a good friend of mine who passed aways auction.

Using your knowledge base which is awesome I think he had a polish model that he put on a synthetic stock. My friend was a military gun enthusiast who loved to modify the classics, it is my desire in his memory to complete this project for him.

The rifle was missing a trigger I’m wondering if the popular timney trigger will be a good replacement so we will find out and keep you up to date.

Thanks again for the addition I look forward to absorbing lots of info from this community.

Cheers

I just purchased a Samco Mauser M1916. It is in relative good condition and has the bayonet and leather bayonet sleeve. Quite honestly I a little confused on exactly what ammunition I should shoot. I know, well I think I know that I should not use commercial 308 ammo, just not sure what I am suppose to use. This is my first and I hope for this to be my entrance into the Mosin world of guns.

It appears that you have a Polish M44 in a commercial stock. Unfortunately thats about it. It should shoot good.

These rifles are the source of unending debate. I would stick to 7.62x51, as that is supposedly the milder round. That said, you will find just as many people that say they shoot full house .308 of any flavor with no issue. It is your face. It is up to you.

Hello,
I'm new to Mosen- Nagat rifles. But now have 3. One has an octigon receiver.
I wonder how unusual that is? I have fired a few rounds through each. The triggers all suck big time. But with a little care they shoot pretty damn good I think.
Glad to find this place and look to learning from ya'll.

Octagons were made pre '36, they are not rare generally speaking.

Hey all! I'm new to the Mosin but hopefully I can learn from you all. I inherited a couple mosins a few months back, both appear to be Finnish M28's both have "Ski Trooper" stocks on them, however it looks like at some point Bubba decide to refinish and chop one of them down 😭.. one of them is still in decent shape, missing a couple items though. Anyway, thanks for letting me in!

Hey everyone, guess I'm supposed to post here first to introduce myself (I'm not greatly experienced with forums). Anyways, I got my first and currently only Mosin in 2020 for $200. She's a blonde birch beauty, an Izhevsk Ex-Dragoon. Sad to say I've never gotten to even take a shot yet: previous owner stripped away original finish and left stock as bare wood, and so I spent years slowly and passively putting extremely thin layers of tung oil on it for a natural resilient finish. Lost count but almost certainly over 20 layers of slow-drying oil on the stock. Now that I have her all put back together, I just found out soon after that I need a headspace gauge to fully ensure safety....so here I am!

Have been enjoying reading this forum and collecting info for a long time. I'm a major history buff and traditionalist so old guns are of huge interest. Cant guarantee I'll have time to write often but it's good to be here!

Hello! I’m sort of new to Mosin Nagant’s but not to shooting. I look forward to leaning from the forum. Below is a picture of the receiver marks from my Mosin. I’m still learning the what the markings mean.

Thank you,

James

Hi James, I dont know all the symbols on your gun but can tell you that besides the obvious date of manufacture, it was made in Izhevsk, Russia and at some point was refurbished in Latvia based on the open square stamp.
