FFL Search....

Post by ffuries »

My go to FFL since 2011 has retired.....So the search for a new FFL has begun, there is literally a gun store just around the corner from the house now. The main guy who runs it was out, but his son was there, they got some nice commercial guns in there.

Anyways I asked if they did transfers etc, and how they did the FFL portion of it. Answers yes we do transfers, don't know the other one.

I assume not all FFLs do it the same way. My old one gave me copy of his FFL, all I did was give him a heads up when I ordered something. But I was able to email a copy of the FFL to the seller, for shipment of the firearm as soon as I purchased it.

This kid didn't seem to know their procedures and was more interested in fucking around with his phone.

So what is the normal way of doing it? Giving a copy to the customer, like my old one did or the customer having to go in and have the FFL send it to the seller.....?

The shops around here were all top heavy with assholes or people who thought their services should be worth a brick of gold. This is why during my heavy collecting years I had my own C&R FFL. You could wait for the dad to show up, and leave the dumbfuck kid buried in his phone, or start the paperwork for your own FFL.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

It depends on the shop, Mike. The dealer I use for transfers will NOT give outa copy of his license. He claims that he used to do that until he discovered that people were using his license to purchase guns at gun shows. Apparently he got jammed up with the BATFE over the issue. He requires the seller to request a copy, which he will then forward. It can cause issues when the seller demands that the FFL send them a copy without "requesting" one.

I had a seller tell me that it was my responsibility to have the FFL send them a copy and that they were not going to "request" one. It is only a problem if the equation includes two assholes at the same time. With that particular seller, I told the woman to just cancel the sell, then she contacted "my" FFL. I continue to use "my" FFL because he charges less than his competitors for transfers and has given me breaks when I transfer more than one in one trip and he is the closest to my house. As it works out, it is rarely a problem because "my" FFL is registered with Gun with the Bun Groper, where I usually end up buying.

Before we moved I used the Cabela's right down the road from our home. The company I purchased my guns from already had their FFL on record and actually sent Cabela's an email saying a shipment would be coming to them with all the details. So that was nice. When my gun was ready for pick up Cabela's would give me a call to pick it up. I'm not sure if you have any big chain store near you that you can use but I never had any issues with it.

The last transfer I had done, my guy just wanted the other guy's email, they took care of it. Cost me 25 for the transfer.

I've never had anyone give me an FFL copy, unless they were receiving a transfer from me.

My old FFL, figured it was more expedient, if he gave me photocopy of it. I scanned it into my computer and could/would email it to the seller, with my information to include inside the box.

My FFL thought it was stupid for me to have to run to him everytime, to have him send an email, when I could do it all from my end. Plus I had done business with him and there sister shop for years......

I've never had to pay for the 4377. Although I've had my ccw permit for years, and haven't had to have a call made. They may charge now I don't know.

We have an FFL finder on Gun-deals. It may have some that are no longer in business but it may also have one near by. Worth a look. https://gun-deals.com/fflfinder

FFLs around here they charge you what I call a "Convenience" fee to call in a 4377 on top of the transfer fee. Hell there is a FFL local to me that charges $100.00 for the transfer fee. My old one charged $25.00 for years before going up to $35.00 in the last year, then the new owner shut the business down.

Guess it's just another sign of the changing times.....

Those FFL finders are handy.... I've used them more than a few times & got very quality people to deal with at fair prices.

Much like prices of the transfer fluctuating from store to store in the same city sometimes it seems. How FFL's do their part for shipping also seems to change from store to store. My LGS and another I use down by Cincinnati have a copy of it on their websites so you can just send it to whoever your ordering from. All they ask is you email someone there as a courtesy that you have a gun inbound. Apparently nothing worse then opening on a Tuesday only for their to be 60 guns being delivered and you weren't expecting them lol. Yes that did happen to them a few weeks back. The only one they knew about coming in was mine.

That being said I've also used another one where you explicitly had to contact them first before shipping anything to them and they would handle the rest on their end. That's not to say they still wouldn't do the transfer for you though. But more a case of $50 if they knew it was coming or $120 if they did not know. Not saying that's fair but hey the alternative is they could have just rejected the shipment I guess.

$25 at two local ffls here in east texas....

you should NEVER send the ffl data to the seller....

your receiving ffl handles the entire transfer........................

give the seller info to your ffl and get out of the way................
