I took it out shooting again after leaving it soak in hoppes, but that was before I read your comments. I will examine the chamber more closely. Its a little bit better than last time. I believe with time I'll get it working. Next thing I try is the brush on a drill.
Thanks all, I'll give updates after I try this.
Mosin Stuck Casings
Re: Mosin Stuck Casings
I still had issues with sticky bolt after doing what you recommended. I also tried soaking a thin patch with solvent and locking the bolt on it and left it soak over night. I then cleaned it with Q-tips in every corner.
Turns out after very close inspection of the chamber, there was a burr. I was able to locate it by coating a spent casing with metal blue, pushing it tight in the chamber and then getting it out with a rod. The area where it was scratching was then exposed. I realised that I wasn't even able to extract dry-fired spent casings with the bolt (thus eliminating the cosmoline theory). I took out a Dremel with a small metal buffing bit and some buffing compound and slowly I was able to remove the burr. Now spend casings will extract after dry-firing on them. I am confident that next time I go to the range it will extract. I'll let you guys know if it still doesn't.
Thanks a lot!

Re: Mosin Stuck Casings
It sounds like you have it figured out. One recommendation for you though. When you are firing at the range and you have a difficult time opening the bolt after firing. Pull back on the cocking knob and then try to open the bolt. You'll notice a difference. Good luck.

Thanks for keeping us up to date. Let us know how the next trip to the range goes.
Re: Mosin Stuck Casings
Your endeavor to repair your rifle inspired me to join these forums in 2022. Having the EXACT same issues on my 1934 Model 1891/30. Brass extracts fine but steel casing does not. Going to attempt to boil my bolt and star chamber and clean it it properly, maybe even use a drill. The burr you mentioned, if you are still in these forums, was located where exactly?demogorii wrote: ↑Mon Jan 04, 2016 9:23 am I still had issues with sticky bolt after doing what you recommended.
