I made a custom gun rack for a few Mosins over the weekend, what does everyone think?

I made a custom gun rack for a few Mosins over the weekend, what does everyone think?

Post by kpangon »

I made this as a weekend project with my dad. It's made out of some cheap 1x6 pine boards that I finished using a Japanese technique called "Shou Shugi Ban" which basically works by charring the wood with a torch and wire brushing the char off. I used bent railroad spike hangers for the guns. I just gave it a coat of boiled linseed oil as a finish. Total cost for me to make it was about $80. It will be mounted to the wall at some point, but I haven't decided where yet.

(PS: I know the carpet in this room is terrible, no need to comment on it haha)

The guns from top to bottom are:

1943 Izhevsk 91/30 with a "pool cue splice" stock.

1967 late date, no maker M39

1954 Chinese T53

That is nice. I really like the finish. How much work does the finishing involve?

Very nice job. What's wrong with the carpet? I liked the 70's :)
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

It is actually surprisingly easy, Google "Shou Sugi Ban" and youll find plenty of tutorials. The worst part of doing this is wire brushing of the charred wood, it's really messy and you definitely need to wear a respirator(unless you like breathing charcoal dust). The benefits are not needing to wait for any stain to dry, and the ability to control how light it is by how much you wire brush it.

I'm ashamed of SA1911, he has a Finn Mosin there and I thought the "nice finish" was going to be a dad joke. But alas, it was not. Disappointed.

Nice rack though! Hopefully you're not yet Finnished with it yet!
