Well it failed headspace check with No-go gauge. Bolt closed easy.. I'm going to add the 2 pieces of tape since it's a .004 difference between No- Go and Field. If that seems to pass, then I'll buy the field gauge. But I don't expect it will pass given on how easy it closed, hence the tape as a pre check
The gun shop said he would take it to his gun smith if I had any question on it's safety, but I don't want the gun altered as I know the barrel has to be set back to correct it, and then it's not original.

Before you pay a gunsmith it would be cheaper to just get some bolt bodys and try them.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I agree, but I don't think I'm paying since they sold the rifle to me as a working firearm. A customer of mine however is a gunsmith that I Would payJunk Yard Dog wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 5:24 am Before you pay a gunsmith it would be cheaper to just get some bolt bodys and try them.

I am surprised they would sell a milsurp that old as a working firearm. Most, if not all I bought from dealers came with warnings about the dangers of shooting these relics and warnings about checking specs and such. In other words we sell you a relic of history and fire it at your own risk. I did fire mine many times, and with the Turk ammo that was made for them, once I had the headspace issues sorted out there were never any problems with the rifles, or the ammo.matt167 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 4:18 pmI agree, but I don't think I'm paying since they sold the rifle to me as a working firearm. They are even selling the Carcano's they have with a box of PPU ammo.. I know they were having AR's built for them and selling them cheapish, so they have a connection to 'some' gun smith.
The bolt does not match the rifle, so I'll buy a bolt body and see if I can get it past

Building AR's today is like the assemble by the numbers plastic model kits kids build, not complicated. As most come with the upper already assembled to the barrel with the bolt you don't have to be a gunsmith to build AR's. The selling a milsurp with a box of ammo is an old Bannerman trick. They did that with the Vetterlis, 40 rounds of ammo with each rifle. What they forgot to tell you was they had no stockpile of ammo, when that 40 rounds was gone you had to wait 20 years until the 1920's when Remington started making .41 Swiss.matt167 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 4:43 pm They are even selling the Carcano's they have with a box of PPU ammo.. I think he was having the receivers machined. A friend of mine bought one of his AR's.
I managed to get 40 rounds of 6.5x52mm PPU for my Carcano but it did cost me $81. I could have bought more but wasn't willing to spend any more.. $30/ box and $21 shipping sucks

Rounds of this sort have always been expensive because they are uncommon, like 7.7, or 6.5 Japanese. No surplus available, few commercial options. 8mm Lebel is on that list, and now .303 Brit is joining it, soon enough 7.62x54r will get there as the last of the surplus dries up, and Russian imports end. If you are set up to reload the brass, and the brass is good quality and reloadable then it hurts a bit less.matt167 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 6:55 pmJunk Yard Dog wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 6:03 pmBuilding AR's today is like the assemble by the numbers plastic model kits kids build, not complicated. I know someone I could pay to reload for me and the PPU brass is re loadable.
As for 7.62x54R. I have more than I'll ever use, but I continue to fill ammo can's full of both 54R and X39 while the prices are right.
