30-40 Krag.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

What model Winchester? It's the Model 1895 isn't it? Pictures!
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Yes, .30-40. This model in that caliber was popular with army officers during the Spanish American War. Not this rifle if it's post 1900 obviously, but maybe Boxer Rebellion.

According to what I've read, the Army bought 10 thousand '95's all in .30 Army, just before or during the SAW. Other rounds were also called .30 army for a time, the 30-03 and 30-06 but in bolt actions. So are the Krag-Jorgansens stamped .30 army also ? What about early 1903's ?

An 1895 Winchester rifle with a hand guard would be one made for the army, right ? This must be one of 10,000 (rifles and carbines) made for the army contract. I couldn't afford this right now anyway, but damn ain't it sweet.
