Post by Dragunov sniper 777 »

hornady sixth edition 7.62x54 R
IMR 4064 , 150 gr .311 bullet

2400 fps 2500 fps 2600 fps 2700 fps 2800 fps
42.1 gr 44.1 gr 46.0 gr 48.0 gr 49.9 gr max

dose 49.9 max sound right ? all i have seen listed is about 47gr max for this powder , or am i way off base ?

i pulled a bullet on some tulammo 148 gr , it had 50.0 gr of powder that looked similar to 4064 in it .
i am so poor i can only afford mustard and biscuits three times a week ..

I could not find my hornady stuff but the lee doesn't list the 4064 so i can't tell you. It lists 46g h4895 start and 49.5 compressed load for 2918 max MV. for 150 grain jacketed. :D

I would be real careful with a load of 49.9 grains of 4064. My Hornady 8th edition manual lists this as a maximum load for the #3120 bullet, 150 grain SP, .312 diameter. Make sure you know what your bore size is and work up carefully. I've been loading down to make the loads more comfortable to shoot just punching paper. I use a .3105 174 grain FMJ Hornady #3131 with 41 grains of IMR 4895. This is perfect for my Russian carbines measuring just a hair under .311.

i have been using 46 gr's of h 335 ball powder and a speer 150 gr .311 bullet in my m44 carbine's , not the fastest , but it is a accurate load, 2 liter coke bottle accurate at 100 yards , my most accurate .308 win load uses 4064 , i was just curious to see if this load could be improved with 4064 stick powder , i was only going to work it up to about 47 gr , it may not improve anything , from my tests, my short barrel carbines all prefer ball powder like H335 and WW748 ..
