Gun Racks....

Post by ffuries »

Got bored today, and needed to make two additional gun racks, so I could get the last of the rifles out of the spare MBR closet. So at around 1900 tonight I cut these out, glued and nailed them together. Just need to cut and attach the backers to them, and cut the spacers for the buttstocks so they don't slide around.

Each rack holds eleven rifles, don't know how we came up with that number when we made the original ones. But hey it works for me......

So, knocked these two simple racks out, to match the ones we made back in 2011.

Picture 1 shows the buttstock spacers on the racks from 2011.
Pictures 2 and 3 show the racks made in 2011.
Picture 3 shows the racks made tonight.

Got the butt spacers cut, they are ready to glued and nailed on. Just need to cut the backers, but man is it toasty out there today, 87.3 degrees with 65% humidity. Thank God the garage keeps the sun off of you. Go outside cut what needs cut, then back to the garage to assemble.

Finished building them, going to hold off on staining them for now. Going to take a few days to go through the rest of the guns. I'll break them down, clean, oil, inspect, and make a list of needed things like slings, bayonets etc. Just so I can double check my existing list. The guns already on the racks have been done already.

They look great Mike, with the cost of Lumber right now you better insure them like the are firearms.

They were quick and easy to make, and allowed me to inspect all the guns again. Half the guns were inspected a year ago, the other half were still in the closet post Michael. No issues found with any of them, so I'm happy.

Here they are with the last of shooting arms inplace. Now I got to tackle a few handguns and I'll hang them from the closet rod.

Although I only needed to make one for now, CINC Household, said make two. That way you'll have space for any new finds.......She's feeding my addiction, which is sort of scary.

Yeah, 19 years as a kid with strick military discipline, then 23 years in uniform myself, has made old habits hard to break.

People think I'm joking when I say my dad did white glove inspections every Saturday morning. He was tough on us, when I showed up at Basic Training I discovered I'd been in Basic Training my entire life up to then.

As for the guns, they are at attention and ready for inspection, Sir!

Those are some really nice gun racks. I've only built two gun racks and they were no where near as nice as those!

They were pretty easy, got the plans from a now defunct gun website. But the plans can still be found on the interent on other sites.

I think all told I have less then $100.00 total in both racks, it'll be even less minus the backer. The plans didn't call for it, I added it to make it plumb and square and to add strength.

Check your PMs, I'll send you the plans I used and can answer any questions you might have. I used this plan. I used a hole saw to make the cut outs for the barrel. If you draw a line down the center (Left to right) of a piece of wood, drill the holes along the line, you'll end up with two sections for two racks. I added separators at the bottom to keep the buttstocks from moving and added a backer.

How much roughly does it cost to make a rifle rack like this? Your rack looks nice, and I would like some advice. I want to make a similar rack for my gun too. As I understand, it's possible to make such a stand not only for rifles. The main thing is to know how to carve it out properly. I hope the price is low so I can also buy the complete range of PMC ammo because I'm already out of them. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of money to spend right now. Thanks for your informative response. Have a great day! 8-)

I thought I recognized these too... These were Ted Derryberry's plans from 7.62x54r website.. Except he didn't put the backs on them. And he didn't use nails as connecters... I had a ton of those racks before I sold my collection. I still have a few left...

In all honesty you can make the end pieces straight versus curved, which makes it easier. Give me a day or two to see if i can find the pre assembly pictures.
