QUIZ: What Mauser am I?

Post by SA1911a1 »

I had the hankering to shoot some 8MM Mauser yesterday so I pulled this old gal off the wall. She had not seen the sun in a while. After shooting I took the old rifle down for a good examination for the destroyer of history, (rust) and tended to it properly. This rifle is a bit of a mix of parts. The receiver serial was struck but a new one was not added. There are no numbers on the magazine floor plate or on the screws. The receiver seems not to be scrubbed, but never marked. The Calvary style bolt does not match either the original serial or a number I found, for the first time today, on the stock. The bore and crown is in very good shape, the sights were on, so it shot better than I do. Floor plate, butt plate and front barrel band have lost most of their bluing. I have a feeling, between the bore condition and the other metal parts, that this may have spent more time drilling than fighting. It must have been here for a while as it has no import marks.

Name that Mauser!

Persian carbine? Vz24 with a bent bolt? IDK.

My vote goes to Polish in origin, maybe a WZ-29?

The Circle Z mark is, I think, Polish

Circle Z is BRNO, I have this rifle bought at a late 1980's flea market for $25. I was told it was used by Syria and for the most part left unmarked by BRNO. The circle Z was the BRNO marking for export items, BRNO suppled much of the Mauser world after Germany lost the franchise in 1918. Persia, Turkey, and so on.

Winner! WZ 29, and you may add an E as a suffix. (export?) Possibly a SCW volunteer. The bent bolt is rumored to be a Calvary thing.

Not Romanian, but maybe a Romanian contract to another country.

Romanians CZ24 serial number starts with a R or sometimes a letter in front of the R like ... XR, AR, BR, CR and so on.

The Romanian VZ24s were made by the Czechs. The R means it was a Romanian contract. You are correct that they came in batches like that.

Spanish La Corona possibly? The Spanish scrubbed the crest off of rifles for years and did a nice job when doing so. Spain rebuilt and reconfigured Mausers into many different variations and exported a bunch before 1968 That receiver looks like their work.
