repairing my scope

Post by BigR »

I am new to the sniper rifle. I have 2 other 91-30s. I recently bought an original sniper rifle at a local auction for $375. It was the only gun sold and no one else seemed too interested. It still had the cosmoline on the rifle. I dismantled the weapon and began removing the cosmoline. Like and idiot, I thought the scope was water tight. WRONG! Now the scope has water residue on the inside lens, melted cosmoline inside and the reticle (?) is sideways. Are there any places that I can get the scope repaired as I am not sure how to dismantle and reassemble the scope. Any help will be most appreciated.

I would begin to google search "Optics repairs" and look for someone who works on old military binoculars, etc. Be diligent, you will find someone. At the price you have in the rifle, if it is indeed the real deal, you can afford to have the scope fixed.

If all else fails: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mwu8MXCbggM

I will tell you this, I work on some old binoculars and you can tear up more than you fix if you aren't careful, but it will be no problem, other than paying for it, for a real optical repair tech.

Contact Ratnik who is on this forum. Send him a PM and a email and ask if he can help or get you to someone. He is the only person I know that might be able to help or get you to the right place.

I have been at my farm with no internet and have come back to town tonight for supplies and internet. Thank you both (SA1911a1 and Darryl) for your response and suggestions. I will pursue your suggestions. I really appreciate your taking time to provide thoughtful feedback.

Five years ago, I received at my birthday a new rifle scope for 300 yards. I started looking forward to every weekend to try it as much as possible, and hunting has become ten times more enjoyable with the new rifle scope.

Keep us posted as to the progress and how it comes out. Could be useful for someone else down the line. We all make mistakes, it's how we learn, so while it's a pisser, don't beat yourself up over it.

My dad a career USAF SNCO told me as a young USAF Airman "Mike, a NCO who has never made a bad decision is a NCO who has never made a decision"....."You're going to make a lot of bad ones before you learn the good ones, and as you learn you'll make more good ones than bad ones eventually. But you'll make a bad one every now and then just to keep your ego in check and deflated".

I remembered that, and used that throughout my military career and in life in general......

I started looking forward to every weekend to try it as much as possible, and hunting has become ten times more enjoyable with the new rifle scope. A year later, I don't know how it happened, but I got to see some drops of water through the lens that bothered me a lot. I also searched on the internet for how to clean the lens, and the only place I could find a good explanation was on ballachy.com . In addition to a straightforward tutorial for cleaning the lenses, I managed to find a lot of water-tight cases with a high level of protection for different kinds of guns.
