Some asshole in Quebec made two purchases with my Visa #.. One was for $70.08 and one was for $74.80..
First thing I did was lock my card and then I called Visa.. I got lucky as I was only on hold for a couple of minutes and we got everything taken care of. Money is back in my account and they are going to send me a new card as my old one has been compromised.... I hate people who try to rip me off...grrrrrr
I never buy stuff from Quebec (screw them) so I have no idea how they got my number but you really have to keep an eye on your accounts nowadays.
Hello,
Sorry, too hear that and good that you caught it early. It's amazing how they can get your Data these days... I don't trust the "Tap" and "touch-less" cards. I'm sure someone has figured out a handheld card reader/scanner. Easier than picking pockets..... I also never give my card too anyone, it never leaves my sight. (dinning out or the gas station/mini market attendant) no one.
I'm glad I mainly use my Discover card; it has fraud protection. Another, reason too use it when paying on PP, for personal items/stuff none business wise.
Somebody in Nigeria is even now cloning your identity, check everything, it might go deeper than just one card.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

On vacation in Hawaii got a call from one of my cards. Some one has just spent a combined airline ticket to Hong Kong and Mexico for $17,000. Fortunately not responsible
I would pay $17,000 NOT to go to either one of those places.

Lucky on most cards you are not responsible for unauthorized charges.
We talked my Mom into getting a card (years ago). She never had a card and didn't want one. But she was flying to my Brothers a lot and had no way to pay the airlines. She got the new card and used it once with United Airlines and got three charges for "crystals" in England. They canceled them, but my Mon wanted nothing to do with cards again! Shame.
Now, I would have figured that would be a slam dunk to catch those idiots.
Becoming more and more common. Here In Phoenix I ran a debit card thru skimmer someplace, could have been a restaurant server stole info, I'll never know. The bank called in morning to ask if I purchased $154.00 worth of stuff at Circle K? Seems they knew the answer and had already froze the card.
I asked the bank how a person does a transaction at a Circle K without the card present? The bank could or would not tell me that, only don't worry about it. A single fraudulent transaction is all it took for my bank to catch this.

The one credit card company told us there is a serious uptick of credit card fraud, and databases being hacked since the COVID-19 stuff started.
So check your statements just to be safe and keep monitoring them. Luckily things have evolved to the point that it's easier to refute fraudulent charges, and the companies notify you when suspicious charges occur. The software they use knows your normal habits, so when something out of the norm happens it's flagged.
Now for the part I'll get some "Flogging" over pun intended. Our one card had purchases from Adam and Eve an online sex toy etc company for several hundred's of dollars. I think NOT........
The wife and the lady from the card company were trying to figure out what the company was, so I googled it. They had a good laugh over it.
Our Capital One card was the second one that was compromised, the first one was our USAA card.
Our USAA card had some snuggle bunny porn site, and some resturaunt charges. USAA FedEx overnight our new card.
Our oldest son and daughter in law got the same porn site, some restaurant and Best Buy charges on their Navy Fed card.
We had 8 ea Netflix charges on our Capital One card, one was allowed the other 7 were denied, along with a Best Buy web purchase and the Adam & Eve web purchase. Don't do Netflix, buy in store at Best Buy, and never heard of the Adam & Sex site before I googled it.
Again keep monitoring your statements..........

They probably loaded the data onto the magnetic strip of a blank card. If you have the equipment, it’s not that difficult to to. The chip adds another layer of security, but not that much.
Banks have big losses due to this type of fraud so they have invested in systems that are pretty darn good at detecting and blocking fraudulent transactions. VISA and MasterCard require in their contracts with the bank the the bank follow their Zero Liability policy for customers, so that means the bank eats the fraud.
It is a little awkward for some of the folks in the card department calling customers to verify transactions to.....adult sites. "Good Morning Sir, we have some suspected fraudulent transactions that attempted to go through your account last night, $39.99 to Only Fans, $14.99 to bigbroa.... oh oh those were you? Ok, well we will add those to an exception list."
