K98 what did I find??

Post by Srupidhaircuts »

Picked up a k98 thats looks to have been re blued but I'm not sure. There are no import marks on this rifle so I'm guessing it was a bring back. The magazine floor plate serial matches the receiver. The bolt body does not match. The safety, and cocking piece match but not to the rifle. The stock that I received it in was a Yugo captured K98 stock. I'm guessing someone had this in a shorter stock then bought the yugo stock to put it back in military form

More pictures will help but the stock looks to be a Russian capture, not a Yugo. The bolt has the same traits but the metal doesn't. Also, the receiver and barrel have not been reblued as the stampings are still too crisp and sharp.

My initial thought was a Mitchell's Mauser. I think Longcolt44 is right though. More pictures would definitely help.

What throws me off is how clean and black the metal looks. Also how there is a halo or haze around the markings as shown in the side profile picture.

Me too. I've never seen that on a Russian capture. IMHO it's been redone like a Mitchell's Mauser.

Need more pictures especially of the complete rifle, the barrel and receiver and of the bottom including the trigger housing. Out of the wood would make it even better.

So it's not my aging eyes....... :geek:

Wondering if it's not one from the recent batch coming out of Classic Firearms.

My first thought too. That "blue" is "new." I think that the bird may be new too. But it is just a guess, I ain't no expert.

Thanks, Steve, I'm having to wipe down the laptop and the carpet. I just sent hot coffee spewing out my nose, thus causing me to spill my cup.

That appears to be oily fingerprints. It may be original bluing and my guess would be that it’s a pre-1968 import, maybe a war trophy.

Yes no import mark and matching numbers on trigger housing. No Russian capture X anywhere. Bore is like new. Its not a Mitchell. Looks way better, I've owned one before.

Ah, I see said the blind man. It can be hard trying to judge something when you are looking a pictures at times.

In hand something looks one way and online another way.......

Like I said in the above post, it can be hard to tell when looking at pictures versus having it in hand. Understand it wasn't an attempt to of being dismissive of your rifle, but it can be hard, from just a few pictures, to get a good feel for it.

Glad it's a good one and not humped.

BTW: Welcome to the madness and addiction, this group is laid back and easy going.......But that said around here we are strict in our opinions on preservation of weapons. So you'll fit in around here.

The finish on the OP's rifle does not look original to my eyes. The guys to ask are on the K98k Forum though. If it's legit they'll let you know.

I'll start with the bolt. When's the last time you saw a legit K98k bolt that wasn't blued or phosphate?

My SVW45 and AX41 for reference.
