Cub or Sporter on GB

Modern rifles and Sportsters are discussed here.

Sportsters:
We don't advocate making Sportsters from military surplus rifles. We do recognize the ones already made in years past as pieces of history and of importance (such as the Bannerman, Blindee and old custom sportsters). If you bought one, you may show it here. Discussion of how to do this kind of work is not allowed. It is contrary to our over all forum values. So please don't abuse this forum. All final decisions will be made by the Administrators and no one else please. Non permanent alterations may be shown here but keep in mind, if it is in conflict with the "spirit" of these forums, we may remove it at our discretion.

Cub or Sporter on GB

Post by Robertroadking »

For what it’s worth I say a Mosin Sporter on Gunn Broker yesterday that a close up shows a Westinghouse receiver. The sights don’t look like cub or bannerman but who knows what the history is. The rear sights are tapped into the barrel, that I do not like

I saw it, instead of using a Springfield '03 type sight like the Finn cubs, they used a Remington type front sight so had to change the rear too. The cubs kept the original rear sight. I'd buy a armful for $16.95  $3.95 for ammo at the end of the add.

Still a bubba to me. I'm a pass on these.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Yea, I never had one, but they are or will be collectible. I wouldn't alter a good one.

I would like an original bannerman or a cub. Like was said before , Americana. Because this one was WEston House I thought it may have been one of the original spotters that week sold but with newer sights. But who knows.

Bannerman, Cubs, and some other "altered Mosins" will alway be collectable even though they were altered. JHust remember that Bannermen used rifles that ewere never in the hands of the Russians and were surplus rifles that the American companies made and Russia refused to purchase. So, technically they were never military rifles (even if the US bought them and marked them up and then sold them to Bannerman. That was to save Westinghouse and Remington ass'. You will see some of the older and bigger collectors will have one of the sportster Bannermans or a full size one. They are considered a Mosin collectable.

The cubs were military riffles and some of them were the same rifles Bannerman got. Collectable?...a little. Certainly hard to come buy and that may make them a little more "valuable". I don't know about collectable. Yeah, maybe a little.

Sportsters were made later, and I doubt are "collectable". The value is held in their parts and ability to find and buy. That doesn't make them "collectable". Older versions are "interesting" to see, and this is the reason we decided to allow them on the forums, but only in the sportsers section. Not the Mosin Collectable forum.
To me........older sporsters are interesting to look at. I understand the need for a cheap hunting rifle back then. I don't understanding someone taking one these days and trying to make it something it never will be. A waste of a collectable rifle. Buy a modern rifle for less. It is better and more accurate. Just MY opinion. Certainly others have different opinions. I respect their opinion and it tells me what they are about.
