Since all this COVID-19 shit started I've notice a lot of SPAM commercials, whereas before that I can't really recall seeing any.

Don't watch TV so I haven't noticed, rice with spam chunks mixed in with some beans can keep you alive for a long time.

When I was a kid, and surviving on dads military income. We had SPAM several times a week. Fried up with eggs or as fried SPAM and egg sandwiches for breakfast. For lunch uncooked on bread with mustard as a sandwich. Dinner fried or grilled (Sometimes with BBQ sauce), or SPAM fried rice.

As dad got promoted and made more money it became a once or twice a month thing.

It being a constant staple for so many years in my childhood, is the main reason I developed an aversion to it as an adult.

Then it's a good idea to keep it on hand now, you will be less inclined to nibble on it when it's not an emergency.

Anything non perishable is staying pretty depleted in the stores here. Sardines and potted meat, Vienna sausage were always on hand when I was a kid. I'll still eat a sardine now and then, but the other two, :vomit2:

OMG Potted Meat, never again. Like I told my wife, I learned to eat bugs in Survival School and I still do, just to freak people out. I'll eat bugs before I eat Potted Meat.

Off my list:

SPAM

Potted Meat

Cheese.......When I was 8 and my brother was 4 and we living in Spain, we went to Holland to visit my Opa and Oma. Well mom brought back a 10 pound wheel of Gouda or Edam cheese and my brother and I snuck behind the house and ate it all. To this day I cannot stand the smell of cheese.

Uggg, you remind me of one of the Sergeants in our tent when I was over seas. Bet him $10 that he wouldn't eat a centipede. These were those 6-7 inch monsters we found between the sandbags. He lit it up with some lighter fluid and ate half of it in one bite :vomit: Yeah... Not even a flinch out of him. He was a bit on the crazy side.

In Hawaii they have large stockpiles of Spam because it is such a favorite food there. Became popular during WWll and now is a staple food that is eaten several times a week by families or at restaurants. Some of the best sushi I have eaten was made with Spam in Hawaii.

It's been 90-94 every day this week until today, I have been inside an old school bus sorting 70 years of car parts and sweating buckets. You bet I am on the ramen diet, even with a good gulp of soy sauce mixed in it still tastes bland as I need the salt so badly. Fortunately I have a large supply of ramen in a variety of flavors.

Yeah, parents took us to the doctor. They gave us something to stop the flow one way and something else to start the flow the other way.

Hell even my brother won't eat cheese anymore.........

Won't eat a lot of things I ate as a kid in Europe anymore. Pickled herring, smoked eel are two I can recall off the top of my head.

But I still love me some bugs and worms. The looks on kids or peoples faces in general is priceless when I throw a bug back and munch on it. It drives my wife nuts, she normally replies there are groceries in the house if your hungry.

You do that bug eating shit past the age of five in front of me and soon the nice young men in the clean white coats will come to take you away. How do I get the Doctors signatures for involuntary hold? Easy, hey Doc, he chewed up and ate this....

Revisiting this thread with my "Boss" this morning and I recalled an incident from early in my career as a Baltimore (City) Police Officer. Guy was sitting on the curb picking up cockroaches and popping them in his mouth. I figured that he had a problem in the old brain bucket so I called for a "Paddy Wagon" and off we went to the hospital. As soon as we got there, I realized that it was a waste of time. He was on a first name basis with almost all the ER staff and all of the psychiatric staff. The doctor told me to fill out the paper work and they would clean him up and dry him out but this was a pretty regular occurrence with him. He was out in a few days back to munching on bugs. :bonk:

Yeah, I don't do roaches, infact we were told/taught not to eat them or spiders in general. We did eat ants, beetles, worms, grasshoppers, crickets, grubs.

When I would teach Combat Survival training, I would take a grasshopper and stick one of the legs behind the name tag on my flight suit. Then despose of the rest of the legs, then eat the grasshopper. Then try to convince the class to eat one, it would never fail, someone would ask why I put the leg behind my name tag. I would remove it, and start cleaning pieces of grasshopper from between my teeth. Made quite a few grown men and women puke......

Lead by example, teach by example, be the example........

The Air Force, felt we would be more creditable as instructors if we went to the different courses we would do refresher training for. Rather than teach from a book, teach from experience.

I went to Parachuting Water Survival School, Combat Survival School (Which included E&E Training and Resistance/POW Training), and Desert Survival School.

I missed out on Artic Survival School and Jump School because my slots went to Officers (Pilots). Then I went overseas for 4 years and they wouldn't fund me to go back to the US of A for it.

Hmmmm, getting hungry for some grasshoppers...... :Drool1:

If that store was in Hawaii, the shelves would be completely bare. I was in Hawaii and went to a local grocery there-I never knew there were so many varieties of SPAM. Hawaiians LOVE the stuff.
