DAC Headstamp .303 Ammo 1944

Post by tjtM38 »

I have a stash of WWII-vintage .303 Mk VII ball ammo made by Dominion Arsenal Quebec Canada. Most of it is in really good shape and was obviously stored correctly all these years. The propellant is cordite and the primers are berdan corrosive. It shot surprisingly well on the small silhouette with pasted bullseye at 100 yards. Out of twenty plus rounds I did experience a couple of slow primers (the old "click bang" syndrome). Think I will shoot the rest of it except for a couple of boxes to keep for collection purposes. The rifle was a No. 4 Mk 1/2 that was FTR in 1954.

Cool stuff, I had have some 1930's UK made stuff and a few hundred rounds of Winchester Lend Lease ammo stashed away. Click bang is something I had a big issue with trying to use the POF crap. The 30's date stuff I tested worked just fine, most I kept as collectable.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

That's better than I did with the Pakistani Ordinance Factory stuff I shot. Nasty hang fires. Fortunately, I've only got a box of it-the rest of my 303 supply is hand loaded.

The FTR in 1954 may explain why it has a No. 5 Jungle Carbine bolt body,(the hole in the bolt body knob).

Thanks for that information. I guess I never really noticed. Now that I compare it with my 1955-vintage No. 4 Mk 2, I see that the newer rifle has a solid bolt handle.

Can you show more pictures of that first rifle? Looks like it might have a lightning cut, might be a No. 5 FTR receiver.

OK, give me a day to take some decent photos and I will post them on this thread.
