The goodness of maze
See down below, that's the biggest sweet corn I've ever seen. 10' tall, some of the ears are 6' high. It was planted 3 weeks early, the full moon of April, and it got rainy/warm and grew. We almost lost it May 8-9 it dropped to 30 at dawn two mornings. The cobs are about to fly.

Time to fire up the combine?
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I think someone slipped you some field corn seed.... You do know corn was really never meant to be eaten right. The Indians didn't want us to know they had better uses for it and yet people are still eating that stuff. It's good for measuring how long it takes food to get through your system I guess. However you do eat it it still comes out corn. Hey, if not cooked you could probably replant it too.

No it's silver queen, already ate some. The Indians here had three staple crops, Corn, beans, and squash. Cherokee called them the "three sisters"Jbob wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 2:01 pm I think someone slipped you some field corn seed.... You do know corn was really never meant to be eaten right. very nice plot of corn, just wondering what do you owe the growth to ? Corn here is a pretty sad sight to see this year in the heat wave. The couple of gardens I see making it right now are being pumped sprayed each evening with water. Just came in from a short trip with my truck and it showed 106 degrees. How in the world anyone could ever live south of me is amazing.

We are back to the weather we had in the 60's-70's, this area is a rainforest, highest east of the Miss. We had a bout a 25 yr. drought up until 4-5 yrs ago, now we get plenty up until around mid July. Triple 17 fertilizer don't hurt either. Also planted on the full moon.Jbob wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 4:52 pm very nice plot of corn, just wondering what do you owe the growth to ? Mom did and older brother still does go by the signs on everything. You name it from planting, canning even down to cutting brush and setting fence posts. I think the majority of the gardens out there now are just stuck in the ground at any time. I missed out on all of that being born later I was the ground crew for dad on the farm taking care of all the other things.
That corn about ready to pick yet ? How about some updated pictures when it happens.

It happens tomorrow. Corncob Monday. I don't go so much by signs but the moon phase. I've cut weeds June, July, and then August when the moon is dark. They don't grow back very fast or big. The stems are tender and full of water from daylight to about 8:00. Easy to cut. They don't usually grow back after the August cut.Jbob wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 3:11 pm Mom did and older brother still does go by the signs on everything. Oh yea, the full moon. My family farmed in upstate NY until the early 1930's, tough times as the great depression started in upstate NY just after the Great War. Fortunately the government provided a lifeline to many upstate farmers when they outlawed booze in 1920. NY became the wettest state in the union with upstate local officials fully cooperating, and supporting local business. Nights of the full moon were ideal for moving product downstate. Nobody wasted corn by eating it, they had far better uses for it, they made ......Model T fuel, yea, that's it, green before that was even a term

Big mess of maze. The secondary ears (nubbins) can get all the growth now, I'll get nearly this much more in a few days. It's silver queen and golden queen mixed together. If you zoom on the pics there not sideways.

My older neighbor who's passed on now used to make runs from the Ky, Tenn areas up to the northern states of ILL, Indiana and Mich back in the old days. There was a group he ran with and one of the boys was Hee Haws, Archie Campbell. That was many years ago when they were younger.Junk Yard Dog wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 4:11 pm Oh yea, the full moon. I Steam it on the cob, cool it down, cut it off and freeze it in quart bags. We got 16 qts. out of this shuckin fit. The cob never gets wet this method and the frozen corn don't taste like socks, its like it was just picked.
