I'd head for the hills myself. You just have no idea what you are talking about. Turn off the TV and do some honest research like you did with your milsurps. And, you again might learn something.
36 years in the scrap business in New York and I don't have to act. Survival, no one gets near me without a mask and social distancing. I researched pandemic survival and viruses long before there was a SARS-CoV-2. Along with the impact of nuclear fallout, chemical weapons, and so on, this is just the second worst scenario that I hoped never to face in my lifetime. I didn't just do the research, I learned about the behavior of viruses in school back in the fucking stone age when practical knowledge was still taught in schools. I also asked questions of actual medical professionals on the basics of dealing with infectious disease back when I was setting up my kit to deal with such a possibility. Back when people who thought like me were called survivalists, and it was treated like a dirty word and made fun of by the cultural and political mainstream. They weren't laughing too hard when they were sitting on the shitter with an old newspaper for toilet paper a few months back. I don't watch TV, I haven't had a working TV in three years and stopped watching network TV around the time shows like Dukes of Hazzard went off the air. I don't take medical advice from TV, politicians of any stripe, internet pundits . I took advantage of things like medical checkups to ask questions, say Doc, I saw that movie Outbreak last weekend..... Back then we were preparing to survive a Soviet attack, and the idea that they might use biological weapons against us. In my kit were Department of Defense pandemic survival kits designed to be used by non medical personnel in an area were there has been a disease outbreak. These are probably 30-35 years old, but are sealed in heavy plastic and are like new. Masks, hand wipes, and a short instruction sheet inside on the basics of hygiene in a pandemic situation. That was my special prep for pandemics, the rest was for global thermonuclear war since it was considered the most likely scenario by most of us at the time. I had things like bleach, and Lysol on hand because they are cleaners, not because I thought I would need them to purify surfaces against the virus. Toilet paper was on the survival basics list right after ammo, food and water The N95's I had on hand because we use them in high dust situations, or when using the grinder. I would buy them by the case, and had a bunch on hand when this struck. Me and my radiation meters all thought we would face The Bomb one day, and still may, but I never seriously thought the 1918 pandemic would happen again, and happen so fucking quickly.

No level of protection is 100%, not even full environmental suits with self contained air supply, shit can happen. The more layers of protection you have the better your chance of avoiding the infection. Masks like the N95, gloves, hand sanitizer, and social distancing are the lowest level of protections, the most basic, and far from 100% effective. What they do is give you some chance of survival, and some chance of survival is still better than no chance at all. I did learn that staying away from people, and the places people have been recently, is the best way to avoid infection. It's not 100% possible to do that in the modern world, but I am doing the best I can. I wasn't born Superman so when I can get an edge on things I take it no matter how small an advantage it might be. I don't tell others what to wear or not to wear unless they are on my property to see me for whatever reason can't be handled over the fucking phone.

Well, all I can say is good luck. Challenging one's long held beliefs is a difficult undertaking regardless of the facts on the ground. I won't be volunteering any more of my thoughts here. And, I agree that the N95 is more useful in the workshop which is where I have used them, especially when sanding drywall compound...

Maybe I should break out my MOPP gear and chemical mask. Still have a brand new suit, and my mask is still in its carry pouch in the closet, attached to my webb gear.

My concern is with my health issues. Lived a hard life in the military, deployed to some real dumps and exposed to come serious crap, and smoked (Like a lot of GIs did back then). Here I am at 53, diagnosed at 51 with mild COPD, had my heart attack at age 35, had the ICD implanted at age 39, 46, and 51, had bladder cancer at age 43.

I catch something like this and it can certainly be curtains for me. That is something I think of daily. Does wearing the mask work, doesn't sanitizing my hands work? Hell if I know, but it can't hurt. I'd rather go overboard and be safe, than ignore it and put myself in the grave.

What about Scuba gear and a full body condom ? I wonder if anybody has done a study on how many people that wear masks now have Covid. I only wear mine 10-20 minutes at the most. When not in use it lays on my scorching dashboard in my black truck, which would probably kill herpes and the clap and it gets sprayed with Lysol daily. It's not made me sick in 4 months use.

I see people going by in vehicles with windows up while they are alone and wearing the mask. Of course there may be some lady's who don't want to muss their hair during a short trip, but for most of us when we are alone the mask is not necessary. It can be kept close to hand in case we see somebody approaching. Don't spray lysol on a mask, Lysol is poison, it can sicken or kill you if ingested. Steam or strong sunshine will kill covid on a mask or other surfaces. Many people who wear masks have Covid, or Covid antibody's indicating that they had been infected and not known it. This includes more than 35% of my local police and other first responders. The mask is more for the protection of others than it is for you, you may be infected and not know it just like the guys on the front line. It's far from perfect, perfect is you stay at home and never leave or interact with others until the crisis has passed ( virus burnt out) Even I haven't achieved that level of isolation despite trying, most of us need to work at something to pay the bills, and get some fresh food. I have a personal shopper from a well known service that goes to the grocery store for me when I need meat, veggies, fruit, and so on. I send my list online and in a few hours the bags appear in the back of my truck in front of the shop, no personal contact with the shopper. This service is not free, it's expensive and I would pay double to keep out of a public place, that shopper is tipped very well. Every package is wiped down before I bring it inside, all the bags are wiped down also. Maximum precautions are taken, I have to eat something other than ramen sometimes, like hamburgers burnt on the BBQ for instance. Lack of fresh fruit and veggies can lead to scurvy, and I can't be having that. I am preserving my iron rations for as long as possible, all of that comes from online sources delivered by Fed-Ex, and so on. They brought 195 pounds of cat kibble today, and 105 pounds of litter , not all for my cat obviously, but with free shipping past a certain dollar amount others are in on the deal who are also limiting trips to public places. Fed-Ex, UPS, US Postal, DHL, are all getting the biggest fucking tips they have ever received here come Christmas this year.

Well it's official she came back positive for COVID-19. So there are now 5 additional houses going into quarantine. There are the neighbors on both sides of her, and 3 houses across the street (Which includes us).

I'm having flashbacks to my childhood and being grounded to the house. I bet you my dad is looking down at us laughing his ass off right now.......53 and still getting grounded.

Curious how many have come back negative in Florida in the last couple weeks.

One of the retirees from my office uses Schwan's and swears by it, so I'm giving it a try. Other than that, staying away from the public is a priority for me. My masks get laundered, so that takes care of germs. Cat supplies are bought in bulk and go in big plastic storage bins. I shop for them maybe once a month and that stuff is curbside pickup.

Walmart.com, I have yet to find anyone who beats their prices on cat food, litter, or things like oil, and transmission fluid that I am not buying by the drum. They offer two day delivery, and free shipping on orders over $35, free shipping on a 200 pound shipment yesterday. They also deliver a wide variety of items from cookies, to canned goods, just never order cookies and canned goods in the same order. Excellent packers they are not. Peapod and Instacart take care of the regular grocery's here. I hate grocery shopping, I hate shopping period, I wish they had this service years ago. Anything that allows me to avoid the public is appreciated.

I will admit for a month I was crazy about the virus mainly because I was worried about giving it to my parents. Now I won't wear a mask unless forced to and I go everywhere. Didn't get sick in April and not sick now.

Edit: Media had me afraid because 5 family members died near me. Then after talking to people that knew them and seeing their pics they were all obese and had diabetes. Since them I know no one that has gotten sick.

I think this damn heat is going to get me before the virus has a chance. To hot to even eat working out in this heat and now we're being told we may have to wear a mask. My whole family is paranoid with this and it's a good thing I guess to be careful when your helping parents who are up in age.
Stopped and got me soda and candy bar to keep me awake driving home earlier this week. So hot it was the first thing I'd had all day. Came through the door and stripped down and crashed on the bed going to sleep for a short time. Got sick and about drown in my sleep. Sat up gagging and coughing my head off. Wife looks through the door and I motion for something fast to drink. She comes back in with a bottle of water and a mask on....
Damn it I'm not sick I'm drowning....

I have, people I know well, friends, customers, and most are a fuck of a lot younger and in better shape than me. None of them died, but they got their asses seriously kicked. All around me people have gotten sick, this area was ground zero for the virus in the early days. 67 dead here, all ages and conditions, surprisingly our nursing homes were spared the worst. The infection hit the general population, and isn't gone by any means.

Don't worry about getting sick yourself, worry about what happens when you bring that sick home.

In my county there are 743 deaths, 73% of those deaths or 543 of them were at long term care facilities. Total cases 9853. Somehow Google is reporting 110 more deaths than the county health department.

There are 621,354 residents in Monmouth County. We are one of the top 10 counties in the state for cases and deaths (#8 to be exact).

Works out to less than 1.6% total infected and .12% have died, but those not in long term care facilities is .032% of the population. There are a lot more things that can kill you or get you sick. 8% of population got sick from the flu last year and .02% of population died from the flu.

So yes a higher percent is being reported as having died of Coronavirus than the flu, but outside long term care facilities the difference is minimal. At the same time a lot smaller percentage of people are getting sick from Covid-19 than the flu.

Here, Maricopa County and Pima County have opened their medical examiner's morgues to funeral directors and hospitals to store remains if/when their morgues fill up. In Tucson, the funeral directors that handle the bulk of services for minorities are operating at maximum capacity-as soon as a body is buried or cremated, another service call comes in. The funeral directors that handle most of the white services report that they are not yet running at capacity. Of course, that could well change in the next couple of weeks.

As of today, the Arizona Department of Health Services reported 91,863 cases and 1,374 deaths in Maricopa County and 13,058 cases and 367 deaths in Pima County (where I live). Rate of cases per 100,000 population is 2,103.2 for Maricopa County and 1,250 for Pima County. Let's just say that I have NO intention of going to Maricopa County for any reason right now (unless I'm driving straight through it).

Positive light there is over 7x as many people in Maricopa County (4.5M) than mine and there is only 2x as many deaths. Thus making the percentage dying that much lower. All this also assumes that the deaths are being counted correctly which we know the numbers are inflated. This is truly a case of the only thing to fear is fear itself. Unless you fall into a high risk group.

Edit 70% of those deaths are in long term care facilities. That makes percentage dying outside long term care .00009%.

Here in Finland the Covid (read: the 1st wave) is subsiding and most restrictions have been lifted. Total 7340 cases, 328 deaths in population of 5.5 million.
