Test for Authenticity

Post by toms356 »

I am new to this forum and am an avid WWII military weapons collector. I purchased a 1944, Izhevsk PU Sniper rifle about 10 years ago. It’s been fun owning it and from time to time going with my friend to try some long-range shooting. He owns a Dragunov. When I first purchased the rifle, I was told the rifle is authentic. I just recently tried to determine the authenticity. I got on-line and reviewed five videos and four articles discussing authenticity. Based on that information it seems to be. What is the ultimate test or authority to make sure of authenticity or is there one?
Thanks,
Tom

You best bet is to post detailed pictures of your rifle here. We have some members that are quite knowledgable in regards to Russian Sniper rifles.

There is also a section of this forum called the "RMNF Knowledge Base". If look towards the top of the forum page you'll see a button for it. Under that part of the forum is a section called "Sniper Rifles" lot of good information there.

Here's the link to the "RMNF Knowledge Base" scroll down a little bit to see the "Sniper Rifles" section.

Here's a screen shot showing the "Sniper Rifles" section.

Have you looked at the RMNF knowledge base (above) at the sniper section ? Based on that info, you should know for sure.

I did go through the points on the knowledge base and my rifle seems to meet all of the requirements. Are there any other examination points I should consider? Also, Is it worth getting it professionally evaluated and certified?
Thanks,
Tom

Vett the professional, a lot of people just don't know what they are talking about and these types will tend to be the loudest or most outspoken also. Experts will tell someone that something is a fake or lower grade with a smile while telling the same person that they would still be willing to take it off there hands. My thought on this, unless you and the expert are standing together in Russia with the rifle, skip the professional opinion.

Your best bet is to post pictures of the rifle in general and then good pictures of the scope, mount all mounting screws. We have experts here that can answer all your questions. I'm not one.

I am a member of Cal gun Forum in California. Has anyone reviewed this link below? The Cal gun member’s opinion is also noted.

I am a Cal Guns member also. Also the co-owner of this forum and have been for over 10 years now. I've been in this forums for over 15 years. I've been collecting "MOSINS" for over 20 years now. Collecting Mosins is a different thing from collecting Mosin snipers.

The best way to know is to ask here. PERIOD. Post your pictures and you will get and answer. No one is "after your rifle" (unless you are wanting to sell it). Also, ask multiple persons if you are not sure.

You can't read a "webpage" and decide if it is real or not. It is not that easy. There are hundreds of things we look at to determine if it is real or not. It is not possible top put that all on a webpage. There are a few "experts" right here on this forum like Miller Tyme. they can tell you part by part iof they are real or not.

I concur with Miller Tyme, It is real and is a later import. Just for reference for others, please show the import mark also. That is very important when deciding if it is real or not. Also the left side of the barrel shank,. but with your photos, it is easy to see it is real.

Congratulations.

Apologies for digging up an old post...I'm new to Mosins and have been reading everything I can about them, but haven't come across anything about import marks as an aid to verifying legitimacy (Other than CAI made reproductions, etc.).

Could you explain a bit or steer me towards where I might find that info?

Thanks, and appreciate all the knowledge I've discovered here so far.
