Blood Types

Post by ffuries »

OT Survey......Figured it would be interesting to see what the percentages are here......

We were discussing blood types and donating blood today. I'm permanently banned for several reasons, which sucks because my blood type is used for in many ways. According to what I've been told and read only 1 % of people have AB Neg blood type, which is what I have.

Uses for my blood type.

A) Platelets
B) Plasma
C) Whole-blood
D) Some other stuff

Reasons I'm banned.

A) Lived in Europe during a certain time period.
B) Certain immunizations I recieved in the military
C) Cancer
D) Heart attack

Average blood type percentages in the US.

O Pos 38 %
O Neg 7 %
A Pos 34 %
A Neg 6 %
B Pos 9 %
B Neg 2 %
AB Pos 3 %
AB Neg 1 %

I'm going to say that a line drawn on the map at the 49th parrallel isn't going to make a big difference on our blood type.

After all most of us here are descended of European ancestry.

O+ for me too. There are lots of interesting stories about the negative blood types and their origins but I won't get into that here.

I am O-Positive, but my wife is O-Negative, so when we had our first child, she had to take some Rho-Gam shot because of the incompatibility.

I donated from 1986 until I came back from Germany in 1992, sometime later I was told you're banned, all due to "Mad Cow Disease".

Straight from the American Red Cross:

"Unfortunately, you'll never be able to donate blood in the United States, according to a national spokesman for the American Red Cross."

"Because there is no blood test to check for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease) in humans, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has “indefinitely deferred” donations from anyone who lived in certain parts of Europe for three months or more between 1980 and 1996, according to the Red Cross."

I was in Germany twice during the ban period 82-85 and 88-92, the wife was in England 83-86 and in Germany with me 88-92.

Don't know if we're eligible to donate in any other countries.

O- and CMV- here, that qualifies me as a baby donor and they use a quad bag to collect the donation in. 8 weeks after every donation they start sending emails reminding me to donate. I donate next week and that will put me 2 pints shy of 9 gallons. It gives you a good feeling knowing that you are helping the little guys out.

B Pos, so says my dog tags. I cannot donate blood due to medication I take. I was forced to once in the Army, because our First Sgt. wanted 100% unit participation in the post blood drive. I told her, "Alright, I'll give, but they'll just throw it out when they test it."
