Re: Mosin nagant identification
Cleaning the mosin of rust is taking a lot longer than anticipated, I just spent 45 minutes cleaning the top of from the sight to where the barrel on the bottom was stopped from being covered in wood and, to put it simply, I am doing virtually nothing. One of you said I should expect it to turn yellowish gold, but I'm not sure I'm doing it correctly. For reference here is me using the brass brush I bought on part of the barrel I have not done it on, it quickly turns a dark gold. What I have been doing is brushing the barrel like that for about a minute, then I spray some more Remington oil on it and wipe it off with a paper towel and then spray some more oil on and do that over and over again, but I realized I should also be rinsing the brush and I have been swishing it around in a container of water every few times to clean it off, then I shake the water off and repeat. I know that it is working, it's just that it is taking such a long time to do th at I am worried I am doing something wrong.

You're not going to get the gun looking new. I would just worry about areas where there is active rust. If the rust is scaling (i.e. a hard lump of rust), use a old penny on it. From your video, that section of the rifle looks OK--I would't worry much. The main thing with rust is stopping it from trapping moisture and creating an environment for more rust.
Below is a rifle I did a little while ago. As you can see, it's not perfect, but most of the rust was gone. Again, the main thing with rust is just to keep it from trapping moisture and creating more rust.

Could there be a coat of lacquer on it? Reason I ask, I got a Finnish M24 a few years back that looked cruddy as hell. Upon looking at it closer I discovered there was varnish or lacquer on the metal making it look yellowish or rusty.

If you look at the bolt from mine you can see the splotchy or flaky lacquer or varnish on it. You can also see the line on the magazine where it was applied with the magazine in the stock. That crap was not easy to clean off, wore out a lot of brushes and it took a lot of elbow grease.
