Backyard Visitor
Backyard Visitor
Last week when I was out back and I heard a ruckus coming from the backyard of the house two houses down from us. There was a commotion on the ground and the Blue Jays were in a fit. I see this in their yard, and by the time I got a camera out it was gone.
Fast forward to today and it was sitting in or backyard, and by the time I got the camera it had moved down two houses and was now on the fence. Hawk, Falcon or Eagle beats me, but it's a beautiful Raptor regardless.
Not use to seeing a Raptor this close to the houses and let alone visiting the same areas over and over. Don't know if it's a young bird, or injured bird, as it seems to be spending a lot of time on the ground and fences in the same general area.

Re: Backyard Visitor
My guess would be a young Osprey but not sure. Nice bird anyway.

Re: Backyard Visitor
The feathers on the left side look screwed up in the pictures. You can see it in the pictures 1 and 2, which makes me wonder if it might be injured.
Left a message with the Fish and Wildlife people, and I'll forward the pics to them when I talk to them tomorrow. We got lot of assholes in the neighborhood since Hurricane Michael, and if it's in fact injured I'd hate to see it killed by some asshat because it's in their yard terrorizing their fake yappy dog or something.
These birds are too majestic and shit, to let something happen to it.

Re: Backyard Visitor
Could likely be injured. I’ve got a nesting pair of red tail hawks in the woods behind my house. I watched one try to take a mocking bird chasing crickets just a few days ago. But the mocking bird got away.

Re: Backyard Visitor
Well talked to Fish and Wildlife and a local wildlife rehabber. They believe it's a young hawk, from this years hatchlings, that is still learning to hunt, and being it's hungry it's getting bolder.
Suggested I keep an eye on it, and if I see it getting weaker to go to a pet store and have them euthanize some rats and put them out for it. If it gets to the point it can't fly to call back and they'll send a raptor person (there is one local to me) out to get it.
She also informed me that only 40% make it to adulthood, I didn't know the numbers were that low. With its boldness I've come to calling it Jim aka Junk Yard Dog. Kind of fitting with its scrappy looks and its boldness.

Re: Backyard Visitor
So what you are saying is if Mr. Douch E. Bag, your esteemed neighbor, shoots the bird I have to go down there, hit the guy, and drag his fat ass all the way up to Jersey to dump behind a chemical plant? Because you named it after me? I am delegating responsibility for the birds welfare to you since I am not traveling during a pandemic. Bold and scrappy? Maybe 40 years ago, now it's more mean and sneaky, bold is for the young and inexperienced, I plan carefully, hit without warning, and serve it up cold.

You could practice your technique on our idiots here first, so you can hone it like a razors edge. That way when you deal with the big boys you'll be a well oiled killing machine. Re: Backyard Visitor
I was thinking home built ICBM for the commies, 10-20 megaton warheads. Are you far enough away from the problem neighbors homes that this will not impact you negatively? Ordered book, How to build ICBM's and Thermonuclear warheads for dummies. Easy to understand instructions, lots of pictures, simple materials from the hardware store and scrap pile. Saw a movie once were a kid built one as a science project, so how hard can it be?ffuries wrote: ↑Wed May 27, 2020 6:12 pmYou could practice your technique on our idiots here first, so you can hone it like a razors edge. We have those over here along with Red Tail Hawks, Ospreys and Balds. Of all I prefer the Balds, the Os and the RTs are stringy and have a musky taste. The only thing better is fresh Manatee steaks with Sea Turtle sauce.

Hawks and owls should be wrapped in bacon, then wrapped in foil and cooked in a pit fire. Serve with a cold blush or rose, the whole bottle, or about 6 oz. white liquor.

One of the hawks that patrols the area around Mom and Dad's house is lazy. He tricks his victims into crashing head on into the floor to ceiling glass windows, then attacks once they're either stunned or dead. Seems like every day I'm there, I hear at least one bird slam into the window.

Re: Backyard Visitor
Our visitor was back in our neighbors yard, getting Dive Bombed by the Blue Jays as usual. Still has the wonky looking feathers on the left wing area and only seems to fly low.
In one picture you can see two jays on the wood pile with him, then one, then none, right after that he vacated their yard.
Sorry for the hazy pictures the lens kept fogging over due to the humidity and the camera being cold.

What will drive, even an adult, hawk crazy is a nesting Mockingbird. Mocking Birds think that they are some kind of giant flying dinosaur. They don't take no shit from hawks, owls, or people for that matter.
