Ammo conserving, therapeutic revolver
Ammo conserving, therapeutic revolver
I worked out a deal on this today, putting my g'ment bailout check to work. The big wheel has not been turned very much. I bought a box of full power .44 mags and a box of .44 specials to go with it. The .44 mags are wicked on an old man, physically and economically, thus the ammo conservation. The recoil also put my wrist, elbow and shoulder back into alignment, so it was therapeutic. I will not be shooting a lot of mag ammo in this piece. The .44 Spl. was quite comfortable to shoot even with a 240 grin projectile. It will be fun to take it to the range loaded with .44 spl. empty the cylinder, reload it with .44 mag, and hand it off to the next shooter. ;) Even with the stout recoil, it was damn fun to shoot, and is a really nice wheel gun. It seems that Smith revolvers keep finding there way to me.
I will probably take this one on fishing trips in a side holster, as it would get the attention of even a large gator if the need arose.

Or mix the loads, a few 44 Spl then a 44 Mag, great way to wake someone up. Good looking pistol there Steve. I can't shoot 44 Mag for long either and I'm younger than you.
I took my dad's 44 Mag and put one round in it, then spun the cylinder and handed it to my kids, being the mean ass dad that I am.....
Squeeze....Click, whew, relaxed
Squeeze....Click, whew, more relaxed
Squeeze....BAM and FLAMES, time to clean the drawers
The looks on their face when she roared was priceless, still have some pictures from that outing

Nice, 44 mag isn't bad, like anything else if you shoot it enough you will get used to it.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: Ammo conserving, therapeutic revolver
My government check helped pay for an FN49. I’ve been ordering more components-got a shipment of rifle primers and powder coming in tomorrow. Got more 7.92x57 and 8mm Lebel brass to process. Since I got a bandolier of Turkish 8mm Mauser on hand and am short on .323 projectiles, I might just pull the bullets, dump the powder and scrap the brass. I’ve got plenty of 7.92 projectiles on hand for now, but need to reorder soon.

I took this revolver back to the range today. I was able to get past flenching and my shooting improved. It is amazing how hard it is to shoot targets when you turn you head and close your eyes.....;)
I think I have this gun down pretty well. The only lingering problem is that regardless of how well I hold on to the thing every time I pull the trigger it really punishes the middle knuckle on my right hand. The trigger guard is getting about a 1/4" running start and hits like a hammer. Next time I go back out with it I am going to put a band-aide on that knuckle and see if it helps. I think that tomorrow the knuckle will have a pretty multi-colored hue.

You're doing what I do Steve, strangling the gun. I've been told over and over to relax my grip and let it roll in my hands. For the life of me I can't, keep thinking if I relax my grip it'll get away from me. My knuckle is always bruised by the end of session. Don't think I'll ever get the hang of it.......SA1911a1 wrote: ↑Fri May 22, 2020 3:33 pm I took this revolver back to the range today. I was able to get past flenching and my shooting improved. What about a pair of shooting gloves? I bought a snug fitting pair of Mechanix gloves and they fixed all that busted knuckle and pain stuff. I realize that in a self defense situation your wont be wearing gloves but you can shoot both ways to have a more enjoyable range time.

Re: Ammo conserving, therapeutic revolver
Ammo conservation? What’s that?
You know you’ve got enough ammo when you try to pick up the ammunition box and the handle pops off. I really should get more metal ammunition boxes. I’ve got over a thousand loaded 9x19 cartridges in a Plano plastic ammunition box and the handle pops off when I try to pick it up.
As for revolvers, I really ought to take my Colt Police Positive Special out and shoot it more, since I’ve got plenty of ammunition for it.

I is my Scottish heritage that makes it ammo conserving. At a about a buck a round, I cry a little after every shot. I am sentimental about money.awalker1829 wrote: ↑Tue May 26, 2020 10:17 pm Ammo conservation? What’s that?![]()

Re: Ammo conserving, therapeutic revolver
With my rifles any ammo that's under a buck a round is considered cheap. I need to get more 30-06, 303 British, 30 carbine, 7.7 Japanese and 7.62x45-I'm low on those. I have an ammo can full of 8mm Lebel rifle cartridges.
Re: Ammo conserving, therapeutic revolver
For me, I'd opted for the .44 special right off the bat...
I admit it, I'm a wimp
My check went directly to the local food bank. I'm not buying many guns anymore...
