WASR Furniture Swap Completed

Post by ffuries »

Well I'm done with the furniture swap. The handguards were easy as pie, the buttstock gave me a run for my money.Took an hour to get the buttstock off. Even with being careful, going slow and only using my hands and I still managed to break a small chunk out of it. I'll glue the chip back tomorrow and set it aside to dry.

Don't know why the pictures are sideways.

That looks a lot better.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Very nice! That looks great! I hate the light wood the WASR comes with. I put Russian plum furniture on mine. I sold it and bought a VEPR...I actually like the WASR better.

Love the darker finish. I need to source myself some furniture like that.

Here you go, this is where I got mine. $55.00 with $15.00 for shipping. Here's a picture of what all it came with.

Now to justify buying that. Being my AK hasn’t seen the light of day for over a year.

Justifications:

1) It'll look better.
2) Surplus furniture is drying up.
3) You'll shoot it more if it looks better.
4) Because someone else did it.
5) You'll be happier with the outcome.
6) ?

The bayonet won't slide onto the bayonet lug, checked the T-slot and it's clean, free of debris, and void of any burrs. The muzzle brake passes through the bayonet ring with no issues. I did cause a ridge (Pushed metal) on the lug, when trying to force the bayonet on.

So I'm going to file the lug down and clean the pushed metal up and try again. I'll take a little bit off at a time until it fits. I'll make sure to go slow, so I don't take too much off.

Need to figure out what the proper screw would be, so I can swap out the pistol grips.

Did you ever get your bayonet issue resolved?

Nope, seems the lug is slightly off centered and/or thicker on one side. Figured I'd mess with one day, but since it doesn't affect shooting, I didn't deem it a priority. Still need to get a milsurp pistol grip screw and the buttstock spring.

Right now she's oiled, loaded, and waiting for the Coronavirus apocalypse........

If it helps any, the AKM at the top will accept an East German Type 2 (your photos appear to be a type 1), the WASR at the bottom will not accept this bayonet. On your Type 1, I don't know where it was made or if that makes a difference. (I do have a Romanian Type 1 on order to try on the WASR that should be here next week as long as the USPS is still operating)

I've got a Russian AK bayonet around here somewhere, I'll have to try it and see if it works. I'll need to see if I can find the digital calipers and do some measurements also.

Found the Russian or original style AK bayonet, with it the T-Slot on the bayonet doesn't line up with the lug.

The Romanian Type I AKM bayonet just engages the lug then stops. I might mess with it since I've got them out. Here's a picture to show you how the Romanian Type I stops just after the lug goes into the T-Slot. It will stop in the same location with or without the muzzle brake on, so it's not hanging up on it.

The Romanian Type 1 bayonet I ordered did not fit the WASR 10 either. Ended up taking a flat file to the bottom surface of the bayonet lug on the gas block until it was flat all across and both Type 1 and Type 2 bayonets now fit easily. At first I thought I was going to have to widen the side channels of the lug but the 'fix' was actually quick and easy.
