One of a kind...
One of a kind...
I don't normally post auction sales but here is a one-of-a-kind that I think most people interested in these guns missed. The 91/59's haven't gotten much love in recent years from collectors especially late '30's models that certainly hold more value than the common '40's varieties. The scrubbed (round receiver) models always seemed to draw a premium. Yet, this one was mis-labeled as an M-38 but most collectors would have seen through that. The great thing about this gun is that it has a hex receiver - something I haven't seen before in a scrubbed version. That makes it very unique IMHO. The prewar stock was a nice bonus too. If I hadn't been in the process of selling off my collection I would have jumped on this one during the first listing when no one bid on it. If a member of this forum bought this gun, I'd be interested to know what the receiver date and arsenal was. This is a pretty special gun and only newbies bid on it
Personally, I think the gun has more value than what it sold for but that's just me...

Re: One of a kind...
Do you think the stock has been refinished on this listing?
Re: One of a kind...
Nope. This is the finish the gun received when it was rebuilt by the Russians, or whoever did these guns. 100% original.
Interesting that I just visited the "other" forum to see if anyone else commented on it. I didn't see that but I did see a post that the seller put out there on this gun, which I commented on as well.
Re: One of a kind...
Last night I saw one on Gunbroker that was very unique. It was advertised as a Mowing-Nagant. To simple old me, it looked like a regular 91/30, but what do I know? I am leaving that one for the serious collectors.
I will say though, that if I believed that it really did the mowing, I might put in a bid.
If you think I am teasing, search it!

. It's the same rifle listed twice, one ending one hour before the other $280 on one and $325 the other. Which one you gonna bid on Steve ?qz2026 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 11:16 amActually, he has two mowing's...SA1911a1 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 10:52 am Last night I saw one on Gunbroker that was very unique. That one sold cheap, you want mine it's going to take more folding money than that to impress me enough to let go of it.

Sure, but I expect the sellers AARP discount, so it kind of evens itself out.steelbuttplate wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 8:49 pmYou, being a great American, would surely give an AARP discount for a SeniorJunk Yard Dog wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 7:13 pm That one sold cheap, you want mine it's going to take more folding money than that to impress me enough to let go of it.![]()

Re: One of a kind...
I've been watching the carbine auctions. It's odd, 91/59s seem to have come down a good bit on average. Same with m38s. Nice examples of the latter in the 250 to 275 range have been common lately. I havent noticed an average 91/59 sell for over 375 lately. I thought this hex one would go higher though.

Re: One of a kind...
Yeah, it seems that the collector's market has flipped around. To me, it looks like all the old collectors have what they want and only newer buyers are buying. And, what we have always thought was cool, they don't. It seems the 91/30 are selling in the $250-$300 range and the carbines have decreased in desirability. Makes it very risky to attempt selling... Crazy...

It's January, January and February are bad months to sell non necessity's. Everyone is broke from the holidays and paying bills.racerguy00 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2020 4:41 am I've been watching the carbine auctions. Neat, do you have any photos of yours? I'm curious to know what receiver date and arsenal it is. (if it's still even visible?)Junk Yard Dog wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 7:13 pm That one sold cheap, you want mine it's going to take more folding money than that to impress me enough to let go of it.

Re: One of a kind...
I bought that one from Ter on the first RMNF board back 12 or more years ago when he was slimming down his collection. One of several I bought from him, but the only hex, Ter was a 91/59 collecting fanatic, and had many. Right now it's packed in cosmoline, and stored away, I was heavily collecting back then and there are many thousands of pictures, mostly disorganized. I want to say it's a Tula for some reason, it's how I remember it, but a dozen years later, I can't be sure, I don't recall a date.

Re: One of a kind...
This one is, indeed strange. No arsenal marks on the shank and no arsenal marks or date on the receiver tang - just a smudge. Maybe I'm back to "one of a kind".

Re: One of a kind...
This seems more than that usual cycle. Refurb 91/30s are still selling fine at 300-350, higher than m38s have been averaging the last few months. Heck refurb 91/30s are selling higher than Finn capture 91/30s. M44s are still up there thoughJunk Yard Dog wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2020 6:34 pmIt's January, January and February are bad months to sell non necessity's. Ain't that the truth. Perplexing for sure. Like I said, I think the market has flip-flopped from seasoned collectors to those who don't have much Mosin knowledge. Tastes sure seem to have changed over the last 4-5 years...racerguy00 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2020 5:55 amThis seems more than that usual cycle. Re: One of a kind...
There may also be less interest in the 91/59s due to lack of information about why/when they were made. I had a beautiful example with great bore, really nice little rifle but it didnt hold my interest, then again I've come to prefer non refurbs and the battleworn look in my collection.
