All Matching M1896 Carl Gustafs Swede Mauser
Picked up this all matching 1911 M1896 Carl Gustafs Stads Swede Mauser locally yesterday. She needs a good cleaning and Kroil and bronze wool bath. Only thing she's missing is the cleaning rod. Bore is nice with strong lands and grooves and should clean up nicely. It is a CAI import. Thought I'd share a few pictures of her.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Re: All Matching M1896 Carl Gustafs Swede Mauser
Good numbers, not super numbers but good. It's had a few go through it but the Swede armorers were a picky lot so a number 3 barrel that has a 6.51mm.bore measurement on about a legit a looking disk as I have ever seen should be a sweet shooter. Sometimes unscrupulous sellers will try to improve numbers with the turn or two of a screwdriver but that one looks like it hasn't been touched in years. Look at the bottom of the stock just behind the triggerguard for crowns, they tell a the story of the rifle as far as rebuilds and trips to the arsenal. Should clean up nice with something like Sweets. You'll love the accuracy and if you get into them some pretty good results can be attained with the right handload. I have one with worse numbers that has almost shot m.o.a. Might be me though, irons are tough on 65 year old eyes.
Here's a good site to read up on them.

There's one only 13 numbers from yours in the survey down at the bottom.

Totally sweet gun. Looks like it has been through the armorers a few time. Can't go wrong with these guns...

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

You'll need to find a unnumbered rod, the Swede's serial numbered the cleaning rods on many 96 Mausers, would be terrible to have to say all matching except......

I have a cleaning rod ordered from Liberty Tree. My other mismatch Swede Mauser has an unnumbered cleaning rod so two guesses where it's going if the Liberty Tree cleaning rod shows up with a number...etprescottazusa91 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2019 12:54 pm You'll need to find a unnumbered rod, the Swede's serial numbered the cleaning rods on many 96 Mausers, would be terrible to have to say all matching except......

An unmatched rod is an expected with Swedes. Matching rods show up about once or twice a lifetime. Unnumbered rods are usually the old ones, they didn't start numbering them till 1904 around serial number 150,000. Husqvarna made some unnumbered ones in WW2. Which you have can be determined by the crown stamped on it.

That fancy rear target sight was calibrated for an m/38 conversion, it was never on an m/96 unless bubba put it on it.

Outlaw had told me years ago that the site was military approved and correct for the rifle, guess I got a bubba piece of junk after all.

Outlaw knows his stuff no doubt, he sold me my first Swede but ask Steve about it now. Things like this happen all the time in this hobby, Mosins, Enfields, Mausers all of them. The Vasteras sight made for the m/96 that's almost identical to yours lowest setting is 100 meters. It was made for civilian shooters competing in FSR shoots, it was never military. Steve has or had one in one of his m'96s, he bragged about it cause the m/96 version is rare. The one for the m/38 stops at 250 meters, like yours. Your Vasteras was approved by the military indeed but for the m/38 conversion. It is even calibrated for the m/38's shorter barrel. Will it work in an m/96. well sort of.

You don't have a bubba piece of junk but it wasn't a Swede armorer that put that Vasteras sight insert in your m/96. More than likely it was the previous owner. You can buy several micrometer Swedish sights that would be far more correct in that beauty than that one. Maybe correct doesn't mean that much, it would me.
All I'm saying, no disrespect meant just we collectors are always striving to have things that are correct and a hard core Swede collector would spot that one right off the bat.

m/96 Vasteras insert on the left. m/38 conversion on right. Note the dial.

Re: All Matching M1896 Carl Gustafs Swede Mauser
The sight may get changed on this fancy sight 96, don't know yet, my groups improved remarkably after I shot a few boxes of shells thru it, not sure if I want to change out that rear sight or not now though will probably need to if I ever intend to sell it. Knowing the sight is not correct I would feel like I needed to disclose, all matching with fancy sights sounds better than all matching with incorrect fancy sight, ignorance really can be bliss.
Razor's 96 rifle, that's a nice rifle with a lucky serial number also

Re: All Matching M1896 Carl Gustafs Swede Mauser
There's quite a few Husqvarna (tilted crown) made sights and sliders that aren't numbered, maybe an armorer's part, check Ebay.
Here's another route, put a civilian FSR micrometer sight specifically made for an m/96 on it. I've never seen a collector or a novice complain about one, if anything it might raise the value. Personally I love FSR stuff. Nothing to do but knock the pin out that holds the rear sight on, takes seconds. Put the same pin through the front of the new sight and put it back on, this is tougher because of the sight spring but you can figure it out. Nothing that can't be completely reversed. Again see Ebay, there's couple of Swedish sellers that run across them.
