New Mosin owner question on escutcheons sling slots

Post by fullspectrum1971 »

Hi guys. I just bought 2 mosin nagants. One is a 1924 Ishevsk hex and the other a 1942 round receiver which has the hammer and sickle and down below the date a small triangle with arrow. Both dont have the square with diagonal line indicating a refinished stock. Both have NO escutcheon inserts
My questions are what plant would the 1942 be from? And why do both ave no sling escutcheon inserts? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the board, pictures would help, but it sounds like your rifle is made at Izhevsk, and has a wartime expedient stock. In the rush of things many parts of the process were eliminated, some stocks from that time period will have no rear escutcheon, and just a flat metal plate in the front one, or nothing there either. All sorts of odd combinations like screwed in early style on the rear, nothing on the front, and so on.

Your 1942 round receiver has the later Izhevsk markings.

I'm gambling your '24 is built on and older receiver date on the tang. Hard times, no wasting of parts. WW1 refurbished. Hell it was always hard times in Russia.

Everyone has their own favorites. Just remember that when you strip off the markings on the Russian rifles they are all pretty much the same rifle differing in length or receiver shape. 1919 Tula is rare, most post 1920 M91 long rifles are rare, 1907 carbine is rare. I like the basic infantry rifle the commie hoards carried when they swept over the Nazi geniuses on the way to Berlin.

A desirable Hex to me would be one that was married to a barrel manufactured during the war. I've got several examples of those and one in 91/59 configuration, as well.

And keep this thirst for more to ourselves ? Never. Everyone needs at least three. Or 33. :shifty:

Nothing funny about 33 Mosin Nagants. That's 66 hrs. of grease wiping. 70-80 trips to the range, a few hundred rounds. Three broken firing pins, two broken trigger springs, 5 front sight replacements, 2 bolt heads, 16 interrupter jobs, 1 extractor, 9 handguard shims, 6500 bore brush strokes and 17,000 patches.
When you get the third one, you'll say "this is my last one, the one I really wanted". Now that's funny.

That's a lot of issues for only 33 Mosins, even if they were all 80's type 53 Omega imports. I don't think I had any issues requiring parts with my first 33 Mosins. A few hundred rounds for all 33 rifles? I shot a minimum of 120 rounds each range trip when I tested a new rifle, probably 200-300 for each new rifle over a few days considering I made daily range trips back then, and had crates of ammo arriving several times a week.

My number I've had is at least twice that, about half I don't have anymore. A lot of the ones I bought were listed as gunsmith specials, a few SKS as well. Most there wasn't much wrong with them. All good shooters eventually, except one. :vconfused: Never figured that one out, sold as a parts gun.
