Type 2 Paratrooper

Post by awalker1829 »

Just picked this piece up from the LGS off layaway:

Serial numbers for the fore and aft end don’t match and the Mum is scrubbed. Bore is in very good condition, sight is complete with the wings. Only things missing are the cleaning rod and dust cover.

Stripped the gun down to nuts and pieces for cleaning. Everything is in very good condition. LGS had some 7.7 factory loads for it, so I bought a box. Put a target at 50 yards and it shot dead on. Paid just under $1,100 which appears to be fair market price for a mismatched Type 2 in very good condition. Spotted in when I was picking up an Indian Model 2 Enfield. Japanese rifles are not commonly found in the wild in these parts.

I have never gotten into the Japanese rifles, but if I did I would have to have one of those. The way they break down is very cool. Good score.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

This one has the locking wedge that slides in and then you screw in the threaded washer to hold it in place. If you completely strip the gun like I did, you will discover that the wedge is designed so that it will only go in when placed in the correct orientation. The Type 1 and Type 0 Paratrooper rifles are even scarcer. On the Type 1, the stock has a hinge on the buttstock in addition to the Type 0 interrupted threads on the barrel and receiver. The Type 0 only has the interrupted threads on the barrel and receiver. Estimates are that there were 20,000 of the Type 2 made, so it's a scarce rifle. One with matching numbers and good condition can go in the $2,000-2,500 range.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Type 1s have a hinged stock. Type 0s and Type 2s have the barrel takedown. You could easily fit a Type 0 or Type 2 in a backpack.

Here are some photos of the takedown mechanism:

Pretty neat.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

The locking wedge is "captured" by a small screw that prevents it from falling out of the action. It can be removed from the action, but that involves a couple of steps. The locator peg is a button that is held in place by compression. If you disassemble the metal on the receiver, it will fall out.

The wings on the rear sight are to allow a rifleman to develop a lead on an aircraft target, based on its estimated airspeed. While shooting down an aircraft with just one rifle is a long shot, if you have five or ten guys on the ground properly using their rifle sights, it becomes a lot more plausible that they'd at least score a hit.

I’d have said the same thing but this one was bought by the LGS, so I was able to put it on layaway. They’ve also got a good condition Type 99 and Type I that have been languishing at the shop for lack of interest-they’re both good condition and reasonably priced. If they don’t move over the holidays, I’ll pick them up.
