Are all M91/30 sniper rifles?

Post by Bradmiaz »

I am new to guns and even newer to the Mosin Nagant M91/30 rifle. After reading posts and searching the internet my brain is swimming.

Are all M91/30 rifles considered sniper rifles? I attached pictures of mine, and as you can see I do not have the rear sights and just a cheap scope on it....I am trying to figure out what I should do with it in regards to the sights. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bradmiaz

No, only M91/30 rifles that were built as "sniper rifles" are such. They have markings (sometimes faked) that indicate they were sniper rifles. Care must have been given to these rifles over standard M91/30's because you can see the "nicer" machining that went into making many of them.

Your rifle is a M91/30 standard infantry rifle. The rear sight has been removed and a "Scout mount" has been installed with a modern scope. Never was a "sniper rifle" used in WWII. Fact is, it's value as a standard infantry M91/30 has suffered a bit because you don't have the original rear site for it. It will make up an OK hunting rifle as it sits. If you are after making it a collectable, you could restore it back pretty easy.

Or, move it back and forth between hunting and collecting. There are people that will tell you it is really not collectable. That is what they told me when I bought my first Mosin for $59. Now it worth a bit more then that! But altered rifles fall in value.

Read the articles at the top of every page just under the main banner. Read "Mosin Sniper rifles".
Shooting, collecting, or what ever. Have a lot of fun with your Mosin!

You can get the rear sight base from Liberty tree, click on the add at the top of this page. You might have to cuss a little to get the sight back on. :bonk: Ebay has the sight, 91/30' sights are numbered to 2000 M. Make sure it has the pin and spring with it.

Thanks for all the info and advice! I will be buying the rear site and trying to get it back to original as much as possible. It’s not an expensive gun but I really love the look of them!
