Mini thirty Ruger
My $300 Ruger Mini -30. They made me a deal I couldn't refuse. I Ben looking for one for 4 yrs. I've got more 7.62x39 stashed than some small countries. This is a '87-'88 model. It was nasty. Also available a Ruger M-77 for $300, with a 3x9 Leupold. I'd be a dumbshit not to buy it too. It has a nasty bore, rusty. How do you get a . 270 Nasty/rusty with modern ammo ? Shewww nasty.

Cool, good deal, I have been looking for one myself for some time now. For the right price, I will add.

Anything not cleaned or lubricated and then let sit in a humid climate will rust ( if it's steel)
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I went to look at this one in the back of a funeral home. They can turn up anywhere around here.

I'd buy a Ruger Mini 30 if the price is right. They don't appear that regularly locally.

Re: Mini thirty Ruger
If anyone gets one of these early models, Knock the rear sight out of the dovetail and order a Williams sight before even taking it to shoot.. The factory sight is worthless.

Re: Mini thirty Ruger
This is the cheap ass sight that was factory on this fine Ruger rifle. Damn it Ruger. Why did you do it. When I tried to adjust it, half the right screw head broke off, then I tried to get the other one out half of it broke off. With a watch screwdriver. The replacement is a Williams made just for the mini-30, that got it dialed in at 50 yd, but no decent group with 40 rounds fired. I've got a little 4x Lyman coming to try on it. 18 " barrel, If that don't make it group sub 4" at 100, it might get a low rating .The way it's set up now, I'd be lucky to hit a bull in the ass at 100. The starting price on GB for these rifles is $ 800
. Put $200 more with that and you can buy a big-30, the Springfield M1A. Well worth a grand.

Or the embalmer had to pry it out of his cold dead hands to get him in the casket. Just hope it didn't rust up because somebody had shoved it up his ***, thereby causing the trip to the funeral home. Did you give it the sniff test?Junk Yard Dog wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2019 3:34 pmSome poor bastards family thinks that rifle got buried with him.steelbuttplate wrote: ↑Sat Oct 26, 2019 12:12 pmI went to look at this one in the back of a funeral home. I didn't have to sniff, when I gave it the colonoscopy, I saw it was full of shit. I used one of them rodeo rooters on it. It shits 127 grain bullets like it supposed to now.SA1911a1 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 03, 2020 4:24 pmOr the embalmer had to pry it out of his cold dead hands to get him in the casket. Re: Mini thirty Ruger
It's easy to get a .270 nasty/rusty. All you have to do is drop it in the water or snow and then put it up for the season without cleaning it. It is called neglect. Even a stainless steel barrel is subject to corrosion or oxidation. I would steer away from any modern hunting rifle with a rusty bore. Besides, you can go out today and probably find a new Ruger American in .270 or any caliber you want for around $300-350. Out of the box, it will probably out perform most older rifles.

Re: Mini thirty Ruger
The bore wasn't hurt in this mini, just filthy. I've about decided these are too damn short. It has a great peep sight picture, but shooting using the strap and leaned up on a tree I can't hold it on target. I think the distance between the sights 22", vs. 27" on a std. M1A makes it hard to hold on target without a bench rest. Maybe scope is the answer.

Re: Mini thirty Ruger
I got my Lyman 4x Challenger scope mounted, sighted. It was shooting 1" groups 50 yd. This is a cool old scope made '57 til ?? . It doesn't look to be ever used. It has a post and horizontal line kinda like a PU. I had to add lock washers when I got home , the mounting bolts kept backing off.steelbuttplate wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 3:34 pm The bore wasn't hurt in this mini, just filthy. These are a handy short truck gun, probably be good for up to 200 yd. for a hunting rifle. No malfunctions in the 1st 100 rounds It might be a good one for Coyote of Hogs at night with thermal optics.

Re: Mini thirty Ruger
These mounts have 6 semi circular points that fit into 6 half moon notches on the receiver. No name on the mounts, maybe made by Ruger ? Good rifle with the scope, a short range plinker without it.

Re: Mini thirty Ruger
I'm wondering if that aperture sight wasn't mounted too tall from the looks of it, but anyhow I really like that lyman 4x. It looks like a solid steel tube design like the old Weaver scopes. That rifle cleaned up good didn't it? Congrats on a cool find. I remember when these first came out. Probably sometime around when yours was made.
Re: Mini thirty Ruger
Those are definitely Ruger rings. I have two old M77 Rugers with the same type mounting rings. It makes for a solid setup, if you properly torque the screws.

Re: Mini thirty Ruger
The Williams sight was made for the mini 30. It's OK, much better that what came on it. With the magazine in the way and the shortness of the rifle I was having a hard time sighting it in, when I got the scope I loaded one round at a time til I got it dialed in.bunkysdad wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2020 2:15 am I'm wondering if that aperture sight wasn't mounted too tall from the looks of it, but anyhow I really like that lyman 4x.
