SKS question ?

Post by Jbob »

Just stopped by a friends sports shop where I noticed a SKS on the wall for sale. Didn't have my glasses along so looking it over was limited. Did notice the numbers on the stock matched the bolt and there was a triangle stamp on the receiver...
My question is this rifle had a scope mount with the same triangle so it's a factory type I guess. Scope mount looked to be tack welded at each corner. Any ideas ? Also had what looked to be a 30 round magazine. Not knowing much about these rifles I didn't look to see if it was removable or not.
Rifling looked very good at the end of the barrel. Not owning a SKS I asked him to put it in the back until I could drop by to pick it up later as I was out walking at the time.
Thanks..

Hard to say without a picture, but it's a waste of time to put a scope on a SKS. They will shoot about a 8-12 inch group. A triangle on left of receiver + number is Chinese. Probably a 26 inside the triangle. Spot welds ? Sounds like Bubba fucked up another one.

Is the scope mount on the dust cover or the receiver?

Toward the rear of the receiver Steve, I think it's the dust cover but not sure until I look it over closer. There's also a shield of some type over the chamber area maybe to deflect casings I'm not sure. I'll have it home later this week...

Tack welds don't sound right, but it could be a Navy Arms import with a proper rail and mount.

Made it out to the range this morning where a I had the whole place to myself. Pulled all the rifle apart and went over everything using brake kleen and many many wipes. Glad I did this before firing because the barrel inside was thick with the packing grease. I'm guessing this rifle hadn't been fired since it was sent over here. Scope mount is the see through military type and has been tack welded to the dust cover. Crappy set up expecting the 4 screws to hold that mount to the receiver without actually going into the receiver. I'll decide later to replace the dust cover or maybe cut the welds off removing the mount. Strange thing is the welds are blued the same as the receiver and mount. Some surface rust from storage but none in the tack welded area where I would expect to see it.
Anyway, I had big fun shooting this and my AK this morning for a couple hours.
Hey Jim, the 30 round mag worked great and didn't fall out on my foot.... I'm very pleased with my rifle and it holds a good pattern. Picked it up for just over $100 so that's a plus too.

Personally I would replace the dust cover with an original type and see if I could find a replacement 10 round non detachable magazine (original style) but that's just me.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

That is why I was asking where the welds were, and exactly what I was going to advise.
