What I did with my summer

Post by entropy »

So I spent the summer getting used to this and bringing my Trap average up:'
1100 Comp.jpg
I had to use our paltry tax return and trade three guns towards it, but I finally got a decent Trap gun. I had been shooting Trap with this last year and the first month of this year.....

I kept losing a bird our two per round to having to cover them. Never broke 25 straight with that one (I have with other 870's), and I researched for a long time before deciding to go back to a 1100.
I say go back, because I started out shooting Trap with my Dad's spare duck gun, a beat-up and much abused 1100 made in the first year of production, 1963, so the gun was as old as I was. I had to practically rebuild it to get it to fire three shots in a row for hunting. Anyhoo, I looked into used guns, considered a BT-99, but whatever I chose would be my pheasant gun also, and it's hard to get that second shot off with a single shot. I considered a used Citori, but all the ones around here were 26 and 28" models. I looked at the SKB Century III single, hard to find used because they are popular with the kids on the High School teams, of which I am a coach of one.
I settled one the 1100 Synthetic Competition for many reasons, the first of which is familiarty, both of the action and of fit. I can work on one in my sleep, have worked on many, and as I said, got my start gunsmithing with one. The features it comes with would cost $$$ to add to some of the other guns I had considered. Things like:
1. 4-way Adjustable comb
2. Ken Rucker Bump Buster recoil reducer on Jack West stock (With the forementioned comb)
3. Back bored 30" barrel with a nice wide rib and two beads.
4. Remington/Briley Pro-Bore chokes (not the same as Rem-Choke) 5 included: Lt. Skeet, Skeet, Lt. Mod., Mod. and Full.

I bought the Improved Mod. also, and a Turkey choke, the Patternmaster Anaconda Striker; this thing is .670, that's 20 gauge cylinder bore. I actually stopped using it for Annie Oakleys, the purpose I bought it for, because it was too tight for when I was the first shooter, but great when I was 3rd or 4th. The Full is doing a better job for me.

I also had the chance to shoot two very nice trap guns, thanks to two nice gentlemen at the club. One let me shoot his Kreighoff Kx6S, a $6500 single with a very high rib on it. I shot a 24 the first time I shot it, and many times since then, lowest was a 20 with that gun. Another gent has a Ljutic Pro3 , and it rekindled my love of Ljutics. When I shot Trap as a kid and worked at a Trap range, I was about 18 when this happened. An older gent visited our club, and shot a Ljutic Mono gun, a single shot, high rib, 32" barreled clay crushing machine. He ran 'em with it, and when he'd set it in the rack, he saw me salivating over it, and asked me if I wanted to shoot it. "Yes, please!" was my answer, so I ran in, signed up for an open, and bought a box of shells, (I wasn't going to oput my reloads in his gun). He told me to 'float' the bird over the bead, it shot high. I went out and ran 'em with also, only the second time I'd done so! I was hooked. I've loved Ljutics since then, and the Pro3 I shot just made it worse. Shot a 22 with it the first time, as it took the first three shots to figure this one was set at about 90/10 POI. When I asked the owner before I shot it if it was 80/20, he enigmatically replied, 'Oh, it's all of that!" second time out I shot a 24. I'm sure I'll run 'em if he lets me shoot it again. I hope to have my own Ljutic by next spring. It won't be an almost new Pro 3 like his for which he paid $7000, but older Monoguns like other one I shot are about $2-3000, something I might be able to do.

In more recent events, Walmart bought me an AR pistol. Well, the quarterly bonus they gave me did. Rongo and I had picked up Anderson lowers at a gun show last year, so I already had that, so when I got my bonus, I looked at Bear Creek Arms, and CDNN, neither of which had 10.5" kits. So I looked on Palmetto Arms' site, and found one I liked. Obligatory pic below:

It's much less clunky than the 7" I built last year, which my younger son received as a 21st BD present:

He likes it.

My new one is nice and light. I do need an optic for it, looking at Vortec and Holosun red dots, but it will have to wait until spring-I have flip-up BUS coming for now.

I have no idea why the pic oriented the way they did. Turn your head sideways, I guess.

Cool, I spent my summer tinkering on the M37, selling other peoples guns for them, took many fine naps, fixed several Victrolas, sold shit on eBay, bought more shit on eBay, ate bacon. Want to buy a nice Belgian Browning A5 light twenty? It's in the for sale section, seeing how you are on a shotgun kick of late.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I sold a few lower end rifles and bought a 91/59, a Underwood M-1, and the Finn dragoon, plus a few more. Range time twice a week. Other that that I've been a full time chicken farmer since Aug. 1. 8 chickens takes me 8-9 hours a day 6 days a week, or thats what I tell my wife.
