I found this 1879 Italian Vetterli at the Ohio Gun Collectors gun show last Sunday. Not something I would usually add to the collection but when I saw it had been converted the 6.5X52 Carcano it got my attention. This rifle was originally in the 10.4X47 round and had been the main battle rifle of the Italians for the previous ten years. Shortly before the First World War the Italians finding they had a lot of these on hand, converted them from the original caliber to the 6.5 Carcano round using the “Salerno Method” a process invented by a British firm. That method is boring out the barrel and inserting a sleeve with the bore size changed to 6.5. These converted rifles never saw front line service but were used where armed troops were necessary but wouldn’t see combat.
The other reason I bought it is my grandson has Italian heritage so I just added to his inheritance of other Italian firearms I have.

That's a nice looking one, some of these have a tendency to look like hammered shit, nice find!
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
