My FAT baby

Post by steelbuttplate »

My M-1 came today, Underwood receiver, and a total lack of markings on anything else. There was a Q-HM on the trigger group, no barrel markings. No stock marks inside or out, just the FAT 73. It shot decent at 50 yd. with two adjustments. Did these all come thru CMP ?

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I got her dialed in today, and found a faint W on the barrel top. Them Italys must be rifle scrubbing bastards. I'm gonna keep it anyway

Mine is a Quality Hardware carbine With a IBM Corp barrel which is who made the barrels for Quality Hardware rifles. I I think that is Q-HM, but I'm not positive. Ask Jim, I think he knows a lot about this stuff?

This is my favorite rifle to shoot. Barr none. It's easy on my old arthritis shoulders, plus it's just a pleasure carrying out in the desert where I go to shoot at my Brothers. Mine is a FAT also.

CMP sold these. Years ago now. You can request (from CMP) if it was sold by them or not. May take some time though. Funny thing is, sometimes they will charge you a fee, but if you only want to know if it was sold by them, sometimes they don't charge and just tell you on the phone. Mine was sold to a guy named Darrell (no, not me, I'm Darryl).I bought it for around $500 in 2010. He still hadn't removed the cosmoline it was in yet. Most of these Garands and carbines were a mix of different parts from different makers. Beware of rifles with all matching maker parts. Most of them have been worked and parts exchanged. They are not like us Mosin collectors. They swap parts to make them correct and I guess that is OK in their world.

Does yours have this? ..... Darryl

I had this stock laying around and was going to put it on mine. But I decided to leave it as it is.
Not sure if I still have it or not.

This one has a similar size 4 digit across the butt end. I don't reckon that stock will get any red varnish slapped on it.

I think that is a FAT rack number??? I see them on FAT stocks only.

Oh, I do have the CMP cert that came with it originally.

Is the barrel on yours rough milled ? Most that I look at are, but this one I've got has been finished/ polished. I guess thats why the markings are gone.

No, The reason I bough a new car was so I could go and see him in Fallon Nevada. He has slow onset Parkinson. He is 71 years old and has had it since he was 45. But now he can't drive any longer.

No, I'm never going to live in that dry hole. My Brother is thinking of moving to Utah where all three of his Daughters live with his 5 grand kids. My Daughter waqnts to go back to Utah and so does my Son. They both lived back there for a while. I'm strictly a California Boy (no snow). But, we are considering the move in a year or so also. That way everyone would be back there close and visits would be easy. I have no relatives out here at all.

If I can find that stock, I'll let you know. I'm not sure what I did with it. It is not a "Boyd's stock". It is USGI new old stock and it stamped with the arsenal marks inside the barrel and receiver areas. It is a USGI replacement stock.

I am considering selling most of my collections before I move. I have never sold a firearm, .... and own every one I have ever bought. I have several hundred firearms. Maybe as many as 340??? Selling the first one is the hard part. Kind of like hoarding.

You ought not be going to shoot at your Brothers out in the desert that away. :no2: Do they shoot back at you ? Paintball I reckon mmm-hmm, but not with an M-1. Somebody could get injured or kilt.
