GEW 88/05 Issue.....
GEW 88/05 Issue.....
Doing another post Hurricane Micheal gun cleaning, first one was a quick oiling and storage, this one is a major breakdown inspection, cleaning and oiling of the guns (12 done 28 more to go). Found this on my 1890 Danzig GEW 88/05, this is in the chamber area. Sad part is I've have shot this rifle and never seen this before, I've always shot commercial ammo through it.
My son took it out shooting not too long before the storm, and did the cleaning. You shoot it, you clean it.
So I'm assuming this is now regulated to wall hanger status or parts gun.
Sorry for the picture quality, they were taken with the cellphone.

Re: GEW 88/05 Issue.....
Experimental rifle firing experimental ammunition and then altered several times, not to mention not made by Mauser. I am only amazed more of these don't show up with problems. I have fired two of mine, one being the Turk rework, probably the safest one to fire as they reheat treated the receiver's when they converted them to the standard Mauser type pattern. For the most part I put these in the non fire part of the collection, collected for history, not hole punching. That looks bad, wall hanger only.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

She's a Turked one.......Paid $212.00 for it back in 2012, I can easily recoup that if I part her out. But I'll keep the bayonet and sling of course. Already have my eye on a replacement rifle.Junk Yard Dog wrote: ↑Sun Jul 07, 2019 8:13 pm Experimental rifle firing experimental ammunition and then altered several times, not to mention not made by Mauser. I still have not shot my GEW 88 primarily because I want to handload some gentler rounds for it, although it is S marked for the newer type ammo I just don't know enough about the pressures of modern 8mm Mauser. It should be ok, but........

Re: GEW 88/05 Issue.....
You still have a barrel shroud on that one so it's been upgraded as far as the Germans did it, but not fully worked over. Fully redone it resembles the typical Turk Mauser. New barrel without shroud, new stock, basic action retained with some modifications. They had to reheat treat the receivers as there was welding involved in removing the barrel shroud and fitting it for the typical Mauser type wood handguard. Still not a rifle I feel confident in shooting more than once or twice, not when I have many perfectly good regular Mauser's with '98 actions.ffuries wrote: ↑Sun Jul 07, 2019 8:35 pmShe's a Turked one.......Paid $212.00 for it back in 2012, I can easily recoup that if I part her out. Re: GEW 88/05 Issue.....
I am told, but haven't confirmed this, the major ammo makers keep the pressures low in fear you will load it in a GEW88. Same reason why the 45/70 regular loud is kept within safe pressures for trapdoor Springfield's ( not that you should be using smokeless load's in a trapdoor) Do not expect the same pressures from military ammo, the Turk round for instance is known to be slightly on the hot side.

Check your Gew 88/05 for me. I'm being told that isn't a crack, but a seam from the insert placed in it during conversion. Narrowing the chamber so it would accept stripper clips instead of enbloc style clips.
Would be great if that is so..........

Re: GEW 88/05 Issue.....
Mike, I just looked at my '89 Steyr and my '90 Lowe and both look the same. The Lowe has been "Turked" the Steyr, not, but marked for the spitzer ammo. Whoopee!

Shit, I forgot to dig one out, after a day running a machine in 90 degree heat and humidity I am just to beat to do it now, but we will get to it eventually.
