Sock drawer S&W

Post by +dhic »

I bought this mod 10-5 last weekend. It's a 38 spc with a 2in barrel. It doesn't show to have been fired since it left the factory.
It was probably shipped in the late 70s. All that was in the box was the parts list. Haven't shot it yet.

“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I carried a 2 inch round butt Model 64 when I was a Detective a long time ago. Uniform guys carried Model 10's and 64's with 4 inch bull barrels, Detectives had a mix of Colt Detective Specials and S&W's. You could carry your personally purchased off duty gun but I liked that K-frame.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Nice one. The box would indicate 60's or 70's, does it say Bangor Punta anywhere?

My Dad carried a Model 49 Bodyguard for off-duty, and a Model 14 6" for a duty gun, until he sold the K-38 and got a 6" Trooper MkIII, then got a 4" Python for duty and a 2.5" Python for off duty. Then he was issued a G17, and already owned one, and a G19, which he carried off duty. His last SPPD work gun was a G22. He carried his S&W Model 64 working for the Marshal's Office.

This is my sock drawer Smith:

Hammerless Safety with a serial number dating it to the early 1900s. Chambered in 38 S & W. Took it out to the range last weekend and shot it and a Colt Police Positive chambered for the same cartridge. Got the Colt for $450 plus tax. The Colt is marked for the Railway Express Agency and has a correct original Railway Express Agency leather holster.

The Police Positive was also issued by the Railway Mail Service to the clerks working the Railway Post Office cars. RMS was serious about security-the RPO cars that had end doors had heavy security doors that could not be opened from the outside. Combination RPO-baggage cars didn’t have a door between the mail room and the baggage area. Many early RPO cars were built without end doors.

Good looking old s&w. I've got a police positive 6in in 38s&w. I load my own but I load according to what I'm shooting it in. I go easy on the old break top but I'll shoot 38/200s in my pre war British 38/200.
