M1 carbine bayonet leather...

Post by awalker1829 »

Does anyone know of a source for replacement leather washers? The ones on my bayonet grip are dried out and several have broken off.

You might have to make some.

That's what I thought. Would it be possible to fit replacement grip panels on it? I'll post a photo when I get home.

How is the metal piece at the end of the handle attached? If it is screwed on you could stack on new washers and put the end back on and shape the new washers. If it is peened on like a rivet, it might be impossible to remove with no damage.

I'll have to look. While I do have many talents, leatherworking isn't one of them.

Some people take a thick piece of leather, cut out the appropriate size ring (I'd cut it bigger, then shave it down to the correct size and conture after it's installed) slice an opening on the edge, put into place, and glue the slice together.

I'd check hobby stores for leather that is stiff enough and thick enough for the project. Some knife manufacturers might have pre-made rings that you can buy.

Another gun forum has a detailed explanation of how the leather rings are retained along with the construction of the handle. Really can't take them apart without destroying them it appears from their explanation. But I have no first hand experience.

Turns out there's a leather working supply shop here in town. I'll have to look at how the pommel is attached and pay them a visit possibly.
