All original, Arsenal rework, or fake?

Post by Chuck_w »

Since I’m new to mosin I thought I would have some experts have a look at my PU and tell me what their thoughts are. I posted pics of the markings I thought you would want to see.

The scope and mount are reproduction and I believe the 1939 date is wrong for a PU sniper as they should be dated 1942 onwards, although I believe there are a few 1941-dated but they are that rare you can count those on one hand.

In any case there appears to be a proof stamp on the left side of the barrel shank above the wood line, a stamp here on an Izhevsk Mosin shows it is a standard infantry rifle as that is where the scope serial number would be if the rifle was an original sniper.

I hope you didn’t pay too much.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Ok, to be clear, could this be an earlier sniper that was reworked at the Arsenal, or is this clearly a fake?

Fake. The date is not in the right range and the mount and scope are reproductions. That rifle was a regular infantry rifle with repro parts added.

No because there was no PU earlier sniper.

While yes it will be fun to shoot. Doesn't change the fact he took a bath on it when he could of just gotten a run of the mill mosin for considerably cheaper. And if you wanted a scope you could of just got a brass stacker mount or some other mount that didn't require permanently altering said rifle. All for cheaper then what he probably paid for this rifle.
