Expensive Tuesday shoot
Expensive Tuesday shoot
My brother came over today to help me get rid of some old dusty ammo. He brought a nice carbine and M-1, and I provided a couple of toys to shoot.
About half way through, my son came by on his way to work to assist in the disposal. (He heard the shooting and just couldn't stand it) He was late to work, but he owns the business so he forgave himself.
As it happens, my brother left without the Garand, and old tractor gun, from between Korea and Vietnam. It is a gorgeous rifle, and it shot like a dream. It will be plowing in my safe from now own. I have been waiting a long time for a Garand, and I couldn't be more pleased. My brother is an American mil-surp collector and he tells me that everything on this rifle is correct except the op rod. Not much chance of me swapping it, regardless of the different philosophy of Garand collectors. This was a CMP from Anniston and my brother graciously let me have it for what he paid a few years ago. I consider that a great deal.
The boxed revolver is a .41 Mag. Smith, belonging to my brother. The others are mine, a Smith .357 Mag. Smith 65-2, a Smith 22-4, a Rock Island 1911A1 and the Suomi. We had a great time. We shot up all of the paint cans I used over the last few weeks. This retirement thing is working out nice.
This is what you have to look forward to D.

My Dad was an IH mechanic, I’ve plowed with the tractors and lived in the trucks, bringing fresh citrus to a lot of your stores, I would love to find a rifle like that.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

SA, that is a good looking group. I hope to rejoin my old gun club and get back to shooting some of my rifles.

What is is about the ping that brings a smile to one's face? I noticed that my son enjoyed it too. He likes the old International Harvester so much, he is liable to end up with it. ( I consider it good upbringing.) ;)Longcolt44 wrote:PING!!!
He brought his 1918 Colt 1911 for me to do a bit of research on. I think his next move might be to suggest a swap.
It is great to have a hobby to share with your son. I wish I had one to share with my daughter, but I am not about to take up roller derby....

Beautiful Garand!
Last year, at the Regina gun show, I sold a Garand to a fellow with a thick Russian accent. He didn't have the cash with him, but we made arrangements to get it to him the next day. He turned to walk away, then turned back and asked, "That's the one that goes "PING", right?" I assured him it was.

GOOD RIDDANCE LGR!! If there isn't a gun range in heaven, then I'm going to hell.

Re: Expensive Tuesday shoot
Real nice Steve. The Ping is a universal smile creator except when you don't know it's coming. I was shooting some rifles including my Garand out back a few years ago and my neighbor's son stopped by. He wanted to shoot the Garand but hadn't seen anyone else shoot it. When he got to the last around and the enbloc pinged out he almost dropped the rifle and looked around to see what the heck flew out of it. He thought the rifle broke. This was a 17 year old kid that is well versed with firearms and hunts deer, duck, squirrel, hogs and anything else you can put on the table but doesn't know mil-surp rifles. We all had a good laugh but he loved that rifle after that.SA1911a1 wrote:What is is about the ping that brings a smile to one's face? I noticed that my son enjoyed it too. Re: Expensive Tuesday shoot
Mike I'd like to have seen that, seeing as how he didn't actually drop your Garand. Was that your .308 Garand? This is a good thread Steve. My goal in life is to own a Garand before I die. Preferably way sooner!
Re: Expensive Tuesday shoot
That had been a long term goal for me as well, I had lusted after one most of my life. My son really liked that old rifle so after a week or so I let him buy it from me. He is young enough to get a lifetime of pleasure out of the old rifle and I was happier to sell it to him than to keep it in my safe. It will be with him long after I have gone. When I get the itch to shoot a Garand, it is 600 yards away, and I have a key to his house and the combination to his gun safe!bunkysdad wrote:Mike I'd like to have seen that, seeing as how he didn't actually drop your Garand. With the gun in his hands and my budget restored, I am now looking for a 1917 revolver, which I will get more pleasure out of anyway. My son has a 1917 and I could have worked a swap with him on the Garand, but I didn't want to take his, so I am prowling the pawn shops again. I am finding that the pleasure of the hunt is as strong as the pleasure of the capture.

Re: Expensive Tuesday shoot
Yes Russell it was that Garand. I wouldn't have done this with just anyone but this kid lives to hunt and doesn't get rattled like you see some people get when weird stuff happens with firearms. He's been shooting since he was about 4.bunkysdad wrote:Mike I'd like to have seen that, seeing as how he didn't actually drop your Garand. Was that your .308 Garand? This is a good thread Steve.
