They do fake sniper SVT's. But they are easy to tell (if you know what to look for).

SVT40 were poor sniper rifles and is the reason the Russians went back to a Mosin (m91/30) sniper.

Here is my Finn SVT40 (not a sniper).

check and see if you have the grooves for the scope mount . I would think thats a plus
My SVT40 does have the grooves on the reciever for a scope, so does that mean its a sniper SVT40 ?.

The grooves alone, do not the sniper make. It takes and additional cut on the receiver to accept the original mount. All of the early guns had the grooves, but not the later ones.

There is a "notch" on the top of the receiver at the rear. That makes it a sniper. Mine has the grooves, but not the notch.

Oh no.....you're not going to sucker me into posting a photo of the "sacred slot". They will fry you on Gunboards if you do that. They claim it will give up the secrets to the fakers and then it will be impossible to tell a fake from the real deal.

Me, I'm not so sure. If the fakers want it bad enough, they will get it.

First, I would have to find a photo. I don't own a sniper SVT40.

Yes, they are cut different and have a "mark" that indicates it is real. So everyone wants to try to protect that information. But it's just a notch on the very top and about 1/2" from the back. It holds the scope mount on.

junkmanted, I sent you a PM

That's intersting dolk, thanks for passing the info along. For what SVT's are going for...and I can imagine the premium for a sniper, I am sure they would be faked often if possible.

I've heard in America SVT-40's are hard to find. There are hundreds in Canada, for 300 dollars. I might pick one up soon.

This rifle is a lot of gun for $300.00. If I were you, I would get one while the getting is good.

$300 is what an SVT is worth, these rifles do not come close to being a Garand and yet people are paying Garand price for them. I don't even care that much for them as shooters, the Soviets dumped the design for a reason in favor of not only making more Mosins but developing the SKS. The '40 was an upgrade of the SVT38, the '38 was a real piece of shit that didn't hold up well even before the war, it's what happens when you take your best people, declared them politically suspect and shoot them, had the Red Army's top brass not have been mostly murdered by 1938 neither of these rifles would likely have made it to production. Too many small parts to get lost, a gas system not suited to the corrosively primed ammo of the era, Springfield Armory would have chucked it out the window and fired the designer. What the SVT is, is an interesting bit of firearms history, but a Grands worth? They ain't that rare.

Bought my SVT-40 today. 330 dollars with tax. Can't take it home until maybe tomorrow or the next day, due to the registry and its serial numbers, but i'm excited to come home and clean it. 1941 Tula, great stock condition. Some pitting in the bore, but it was the best out of the 3 there. I don't expect much, as every SVT40 was used in combat. It just adds to the history of the gun. The pitting isn't bad. Plum bolt, and I believe it has an AVT-40 stock, because it has the notches on both sides of the safety. The stock matches the receiver, however. I'll put pics up when I get it home.
