Try taking the rear shim out, and just use a shim at the front about 2-3 inches back from the muzzle. Then after that double it over and see what the results are. If she shoots consistant within 6 inches at 100yds, your rifle is capable of winning a milsurp match, and the rest is up to you.

When going to a match, I always take a backup rifle, cause you never know.

I will try that. Bad weather this weekend so it may be a few days.

After 3 sessions with about 40 rounds per, the bore is starting to clean up nicely with the boiling water and Hoppes treatment after each session. The bore seems to actually starting to get shiney :D . I Still pull blue patches out with the Hoppes so there is more to go.

So the problem is the bore maybe getting better at the same time I am playing with the shims and not attributing the improvement to the right cause. Oh well, fun anyways.

Junk Yard Dog wrote:These rifles also heat up fast, POI will shift as the barrel heats after 20 rounds shot quickly. This is why I bring more than one rifle with me to a shoot, I let the rifle cool while I go bang away with something else. Get ot hot enough and the cosmoline will start to boil out of the stock.
I put a fast 40 rounds through my '33 last time I went to the range and boy did she get all hot and sticky. That sounds kind of dirty doesn't it?
I picked up my '43 and put 20 rounds through her and only hit the small round pistol target once at 50 yards. HUH? I usually keep most of them at least on the paper. Then I noticed the site had been left a few notches up when I clean it and there was a passable group of holes in the cardboard just above the target. Probably was set for 200 yards or so.
I am going to try my '53 M44 in the morning for the first time and see how she shoots.
I don't know what it is with the number 3 but I suppose I need to watch for a '23 next. :toast:

Well, went to the range to try some initial hand loads. Slugged the barrel at 0.313+ and loaded some Hornady 0.312 diam bullets.

Shot at 50 yrds alternating shots between my hand load and Russian surplus to take out any barrel heating effects in the comparison. Pic below. Upper right "group" is the Russian surplus control and lower left is the custom reload.

Obviously I am very pleased. The low shot in the handload group was my fault. The 3 shot group on the lower right was my 12 yr old son's work. Now I can order the Elby sight adjustment tool and line er up.

Load info:
PRVI brass
44g IMR4985
CCI 200primer
Hornady 3120SP bullet (150gr 0.312)

Man, that is some nice shooting...and impressive homework on the hand loads. Also, though your son has a different line of sight than you, he did an impressive job!

Nicely done :)

:D That load was the first one I tried (right out of the Hornady manual). I was expecting I would need to tweak it and play but I might just call it quits and shoot this one for a while. I have some 0.311 bullets on order I just want to try for curiosity. I asked my son to shot to the right as not to 'spoil' my group.

This thing shoots as good as my M1.

Very nice! He'll be giving you some serious competition soon lol.

You'll like the Elby Sight tool, it comes highly recommended.

Thanks for the range report...again, nicely done!
