New to me 1904 Carl Gustafs M1896 Swedish Mauser

Post by RazorBurn »

I picked this 1904 Carl Gustafs M1896 Swedish Mauser up today for $325.00 out the door. Receiver, bolt, bolt release, rear sight and butt plate matches. Front band and floor plate does not match which is typical of most I've seen. Bore has strong lands and grooves, and I'm sure it will clean up nicely. Stock looks like it's walnut to me, and it does not look to me like the muzzle is threaded with a muzzle cap. It even came with a box of M/94 ammunition too.

I'm looking forward to next weekend to clean this one up. I don't know if I'll try to take it out of the stock considering how big of a pain in the ass they are to get them out of the stock. :)

That's a beauty and I'm willing to bet that she's going to shoot tight groups.

All rifles are different but mine really likes the 139gr softpoint PPU ammo.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

That is a very nice rifle. Congratulations! The Swede works for me like it has self homing bullets. It is certainly one of my favorite shooters.

First time I've ever heard the stock on a Swede is hard to remove. Take off the sling if it has one. Pull the cleaning rod out. Two band springs push down and off using the shown tool, pull off the bands, pull the sight ladder all the way up. Take off the hand guard, Remove two screws. I can do it in under five minutes.

Make a tool out of a yardstick or a paint paddle that looks lok a 6" long arrowhead and use the flat point to push the band spring down while at the same time pushing the band forward. Sort of the same motion as popping the top off of a beer. The hardest part.

The last two I had I never was able to get the front band spring off. I ended up giving up as I didn't want to damage the finish or the stock. I'm kinda known for being a bull in a china shop, so I have to reel myself in sometimes. :D

Thanks for the tip on making the tool. I'll have to give that a try.

I forgot, this link will tell you all about your rifle's condition from the disc on the buttstock from the last time it was at an arsenal. http://dutchman.rebooty.com/disc.html

Sweet. I love the Swede Mausers. Excellent ammo too :)

Try using a small socket and a medium trigger clamp to hold the band springs down while you remove the bands or nose cap. These have plastic clamps which will not damage the wood. I use the same thing for removing all varieties of rear sight springs or feisty Mosin barrel bands.

I picked up a 1900 Oberndorf M-96 last fall for a steal at the local gun show.

Really you're making band removal far to complicated using a socket and trigger clamp.
